Only applicable to yarns spun on conventional systems and not applicable to OE (open-end spun) or interlaced yarns, for example. A length of yarn is removed from the fabric and, while under tension, is secured in two clamps which are at a known distance apart. One of these clamps is then rotated until all twist is removed from the length of yarn.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 7211-4:1984 is an international standard established by ISO (International Organization for Standardization) that specifies a precise method for determining the twist in yarn removed from woven fabrics. This standard is focused exclusively on yarns produced by conventional spinning systems and explicitly excludes open-end (OE) spun or interlaced yarns. It outlines a standardized procedure for quantifying the number of twists per unit length in yarn extracted from fabric, ensuring consistency and reliability in textile testing and quality control.
The procedure involves securing a length of yarn, under tension, between two clamps, and then rotating one clamp until all twist is removed. The rotations required to achieve this are used to calculate the twist per meter of yarn, providing critical data for fabric and yarn analysis.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Applicability
Applicable to conventional spun yarns removed from woven fabrics; not suitable for OE (open-end) or interlaced yarns. -
Test Principle
A yarn length is isolated under tension between two clamps. One clamp is rotated to counteract the twist in the yarn until fully untwisted. -
Required Apparatus
- Twist counter with two clamps (one rotatable and connected to a revolution counter)
- Dissecting needle to confirm twist removal
- Magnifying device for specimen examination
- Means to apply standard straightening tension per ISO 7211-3
-
Test Preparation
Specimens are taken from warp and weft directions of fabric strips conditioned as per ISO 139. Appropriate test lengths and minimum numbers of specimens are specified for different yarn types (folded, continuous filament, single spun yarns). -
Testing Procedure
Determination of twist direction (S or Z twist), followed by measuring the number of turns needed to remove the twist under controlled tension. This produces twist values in turns per meter. -
Calculation and Reporting
Formula for calculating turns per meter:
turns/m = (number of turns recorded × 100) / (test length in cm)
The mean result is reported along with test conditions, twist direction, and any deviations.
Applications
ISO 7211-4:1984 provides textile manufacturers, quality control laboratories, and researchers with a consistent and reliable method to analyze the twist characteristics of yarns within woven fabrics. The data derived from this test are crucial for:
-
Quality Assurance
Ensuring consistency in yarn twist, which affects fabric properties like strength, texture, and durability. -
Textile Product Development
Optimizing yarn properties to meet specific end-use requirements. -
Troubleshooting and Process Control
Identifying twist-related issues in fabric production that may affect performance or handling. -
Comparison Across Suppliers and Batches
Providing a standardized measurement for verifying yarn twist specifications.

Summary
ISO 7211-4:1984 is an essential standard for professionals in the textile industry aiming to perform precise and consistent assessments of yarn twist in woven fabrics. By following this standardized method, testers can accurately determine the twist level, a key factor influencing fabric quality and performance. The standard supports improved product development, quality control, and technical communication related to yarn construction within woven textile products.
