Specifies the technological test as regards mash pumps. Includes definitions, and gives an example of test report. Annex A shows a standard motor-pump-group. A grape transfer apparatur is given in annex B. The pressure regulating device is illustrated in annex C. Annex D includes a control form for mash pump quantitative test. The control form for qualitative test given in annex E. The control form for overall evaluation is show in annex F.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 7224:1983 specifies methods of test for mash pumps used in vine cultivation and wine making. The standard defines test procedures and measurements to assess the technological performance of grape-transfer pumps from both quantitative and qualitative viewpoints. It includes definitions, a sample test report, and six informative annexes that show a reference motor‑pump group, a grape transfer apparatus, a pressure‑regulating device and standard control forms.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and purpose: Determine technological characteristics of mash pumps (grape transfer pumps) and compare test pumps with a reference pump.
- Definitions: Terms such as feeding-in, yield, pumping height, power of the moto‑pump group, energy consumption and overall evaluation are defined (complements ISO 3835/2 vocabulary).
- Reference equipment: A rotary elliptic piston reference pump (annex A) with ~30 t/h capacity at 1 bar is used for comparison.
- Test rig: Standardized grape transfer unit (annex B) - stainless steel pipe (150 or 152.4 mm diameter), anti‑ram 50 L bottle, manometer, bends, Y‑valve and a pressure‑regulating device (annex C).
- Quantitative test procedure: Two comparative transfers using identical grape lots (typically ~1 t each) at delivery pressures of 1 bar and 3 bar; measure yield (t/h), energy consumption (W·h/t), motor power and pressure extremes.
- Qualitative test procedure: Collect and inspect grapes after pumping (minimum lots of 180 kg); assess condition of stalks, whole and crushed berries and pips; determine oenological parameters.
- Analytical measurements: Must density at 20 °C, sugar content (g/L), total acidity (meq/L), pH, total polyphenols, iron, turbidity, etc., recorded in the test report.
- Reporting and forms: Annexes D–F provide standard control forms for quantitative, qualitative and overall evaluation, and Annex E/F examples of test report content.
Applications and users
ISO 7224 is useful for:
- Pump manufacturers validating design and performance of mash pumps.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies performing standardized performance and durability testing.
- Winery equipment buyers and vineyard managers comparing pumps for procurement based on yield, grape integrity and energy use.
- R&D and quality assurance teams optimizing pump operation, maintenance and safety features.
Practical benefits include objective comparison of grape transfer efficiency, reduction of grape damage, energy consumption benchmarking and standardized documentation for procurement and compliance.
