ISO 7240-1:2014 provides a set of general guidelines and definitions used in describing the fire detection and alarm system (FDAS) equipment installed in and around buildings, and the tests and requirements for these equipments in the other parts of ISO 7240. ISO 7240-1:2014 does not apply to smoke alarms, the requirements for which are specified in ISO 12239.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 7240-1:2014 - Fire detection and alarm systems - Part 1: General and definitions - establishes the common terminology, general guidelines and foundational concepts used across the ISO 7240 series for fire detection and alarm systems (FDAS). It defines components, functions and basic requirements referenced by the other parts of ISO 7240 and clarifies the scope of applicability (note: smoke alarms are excluded and covered by ISO 12239).
Key topics and requirements
ISO 7240-1:2014 focuses on standardized definitions and general functional expectations rather than detailed device specifications. Key technical topics covered include:
- Terms and definitions for FDAS elements such as detectors (analogue, combination, aspirating), addressable points, control and indicating equipment, audible and visual alarm devices (AAD/VAD), transmission paths and ancillary equipment.
- System functions and performance objectives: detection, reliable signal transmission, clear alarm indication, fault signalling and immunity to false triggers.
- Component and system interactions: definitions of compatibility, configuration, detection circuits, and the need to assess combined operation of components (see ISO 7240-13 for compatibility assessment).
- Environmental and operational resilience: expectation that components will perform under realistic conditions (corrosion, vibration, electromagnetic interference, shock).
- Commissioning, documentation and testing: emphasis on verification that installed FDAS meets defined requirements and on providing necessary documentation for operation and maintenance.
- Abbreviations and measurement terms used across the series (e.g., A-weighted sound pressure level, aerosol density, final battery voltage).
Applications and who uses this standard
ISO 7240-1:2014 is intended as the foundational reference for anyone involved in the lifecycle of fire detection and alarm systems:
- Manufacturers - to align product definitions and support compliance with other ISO 7240 parts.
- System designers and specifiers - to create consistent detection concepts, configurations and system-level requirements.
- Installers and commissioning engineers - to follow accepted terminology and verify installed systems meet intended functions.
- Testing laboratories and certifiers - as the baseline vocabulary for test reports and conformity assessment.
- Facility managers, authorities having jurisdiction and consultants - to interpret system capabilities, documentation and alarm/fault reporting.
Related standards
