This document specifies a test method for the determination of burning behaviour of textile fibres by oxygen index. This document is only used for the purpose of testing burning behaviour of textile fibres under conditions of this test, controlling quality of the products, or studying the factors causing the fire of some particular textile fibres. It is not used for assessing fire risk in their actual use.

Apparatus: test chimney (per ISO 4589-2), specimen holder, calibrated mass flow meters/controllers or oxygen analyser (measurement accuracy ±0.5 %), flame igniter, fume extraction, and ancillary lab equipment (balance, timing device, airtight storage).
Gas supplies and control: high-purity oxygen/nitrogen supplies (examples in the standard include ≥99.99 % for flow-meter control and ≥98 % when using an analyser), needle valves and calibrated orifices, and flow-rate control to achieve required chimney flow (precision requirements are specified).
Specimen preparation: procedures for staple fibres (carding, spinning to yarn <60 tex, skein winding - typical skein mass (0.30 ± 0.03) g and twist guidance) and filament yarns; marking, preconditioning and conditioning per ISO 139.
Test procedure: environment, initial oxygen fraction, specimen mounting (clamp position requirements), ignition, observation and recording, iterative selection of oxygen fractions to find the minimum sustaining concentration.
Results and reporting: calculation and expression of OI, determination of constants (K), verification of step sizes, precision data, and required test report content. Informative annexes provide examples and precision experiments.
