Silicon content can be determined in the range of 0,2 % (m/m) to 1 % (m/m). The principle is dissolution of a test portion in acid, filtration and aspiration of the test solution into a nitrous oxide-acetylene flame of an atomic absorption spectrometer, combustion of the filter, volatilization of silica, fusion of the residue, dissolution of the melt in dilute acid, aspiration of this second solution into another such flame, measurement of the absorbance of the resonance line energy from the spectrum of aluminium and comparison with that of calibration solutions at 309,3 nm.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 7530-7:1992 is an international standard developed by ISO/TC 155, Sub-Committee SC 4, focused on the chemical analysis of nickel alloys. This part of the ISO 7530 series specifies a precise method for the determination of aluminium content in nickel alloys using flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). The standard is tailored to measure aluminium concentrations in the range of 0.2% to 4.0% (m/m). It ensures consistency, accuracy, and repeatability in quality control and metallurgical analysis within industries handling nickel-based materials.
Key Topics
- Analytical Principle: The method involves dissolving a test portion of nickel alloy in acid, followed by filtration. The solution is aspirated into a nitrous oxide-acetylene flame in an atomic absorption spectrometer where aluminium’s absorbance at 309.3 nm is measured.
- Sample Preparation: Includes combustion and oxidation of filter residue, volatilization of silica, fusion with potassium pyrosulfate, and re-dissolution in acid for a second atomic absorption measurement.
- Calibration: Aluminium standard solutions are prepared with precise hydrochloric acid concentrations to ensure calibration curve accuracy.
- Reagents and Apparatus: Requires specific chemicals including hydrofluoric acid, potassium pyrosulfate, and carefully prepared aluminium standards. Equipment includes platinum crucibles, plastics beakers (preferably polytetrafluoroethylene), and atomic absorption spectrometers with nitrous oxide-acetylene flame sources.
- Precision and Accuracy: The standard outlines repeatability and reproducibility criteria confirmed by inter-laboratory testing with detailed statistical evaluation.
Applications
- Metallurgical Quality Control: Ensures consistent aluminium content in nickel alloys, critical for materials used in high-performance engineering applications.
- Research and Development: Supports the development of new nickel-based alloys requiring precise elemental analysis.
- Industrial Manufacturing: Helps control alloy composition in aerospace, chemical processing, and electronic industries where nickel alloys are prevalent.
- Regulatory Compliance: Assists in meeting international quality standards by providing a reproducible method for aluminium content determination.
