Covers procedures for designing, preparing, stressing, exposing and inspecting C-ring specimens. These versatile, economical specimens may be used to test a variety of product forms including parts joined by welding. C-ring specimens may be stressed to predeterminded levels, using simple equipment for application of either constant load or constant strain.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 7539-5:1989 - "Corrosion of metals and alloys - Stress corrosion testing - Part 5: Preparation and use of C‑ring specimens" specifies procedures for designing, preparing, stressing, exposing and inspecting C‑ring specimens used to assess susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking (SCC). Part 5 is intended to be read with ISO 7539‑1 (general guidance) and is one part of the ISO 7539 series on stress corrosion testing. The standard covers specimen geometry, stress analysis, stressing methods, surface preparation, exposure practices, inspection and reporting.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Specimen design and size: Guidelines for C‑ring dimensions and orientation. C‑rings with an outside diameter less than 15 mm are not recommended due to machining and stressing precision issues. Notched and pre‑cracked variants are addressed (see related parts for pre‑cracked specimens).
- Stress considerations: Focus on circumferential tensile stress distribution through the ring thickness and around the arc; recognition of biaxial and, for notched rings, triaxial stress states. Residual stresses and thermal expansion differences (ring vs. bolt) must be considered.
- Stressing methods: Practical methods include bolt tightening (constant strain), wedge‑opening inserts, calibrated springs for approximate constant load, and electrical strain‑gauge monitoring to reach target circumferential stress. Annex A provides calculation methods for elastic stress; finite element analysis may be used for complex geometries.
- Machining and surface preparation: High‑quality machining (avoid overheating or plastic flow), degreasing, and careful chemical/electrochemical cleaning where appropriate. Avoid processes that generate hydrogen for susceptible materials. Final surface prep should normally be completed before stressing.
- Exposure and assembly: Prevent galvanic contact and crevice corrosion between ring and fixture (use insulating bushings, coatings or same‑material inserts). Consider stress relaxation at elevated temperature.
- Inspection and assessment: Visual inspection and low‑magnification checks are common; ambiguous indications should be followed by continued exposure or metallographic cross‑sectioning. Report times to cracking, failure criteria, and detailed test parameters.
- Test reporting: Record stressing method, applied stress magnitude, specimen orientation, dimensions, surface prep, alloy identification and environment details.
Applications and users
ISO 7539‑5 is practical for:
- Corrosion engineers and materials scientists evaluating SCC resistance
- Metallurgical and failure analysis labs performing standardized stress corrosion tests
- Quality assurance and R&D teams testing welded joints, tubes, rods, plates and small components
- Certification bodies and standards users who require reproducible SCC test methods
