Abstract
Overview
ISO 7780:1998 - Rubbers and rubber latices - Determination of manganese content - Sodium periodate photometric methods - defines two photometric procedures for measuring total manganese in raw rubbers, latices and compounded/vulcanized rubbers. Both methods oxidize manganese to permanganate with sodium periodate and determine concentration by spectrophotometric measurement at ~525 nm. The standard addresses sample preparation, reagents, instrumentation and calibration required for reliable manganese determination in elastomers.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Two validated methods
- General method: Suitable for compounded or vulcanized rubbers, especially when samples contain heavy loadings of inert fillers (silicates, CaCO3) or ingredients that form insoluble phosphates. Involves ashing/fusion (platinum crucible or fluoroborate fusion) or acid digestion when chlorine is present.
- Restricted method: Shorter route for raw rubbers, latices and compounds with light filler loadings (typically < ~10 %) - ashing in silica crucibles or sulfuric/nitric digestion when chlorine is present.
- Oxidation and measurement
- Oxidize manganese to permanganate by boiling the prepared solution with sodium periodate.
- Measure absorbance at about 525 nm using a photometer/spectrophotometer and matched cells.
- Sample handling and contamination control
- Key reagents and apparatus
- Sodium periodate, sodium fluoroborate (for fusion), sulfuric/nitric/hydrofluoric acids (for digestions and silicate volatilization), platinum or silica crucibles, Kjeldahl flask, muffle furnace, sintered-glass filters, spectrophotometer.
- Calibration
- Prepare standard matching solutions from a manganese standard (potassium permanganate or manganese sulfate methods given) and construct a calibration graph for quantitation.
Applications and Who Uses It
- Quality control and QA/QC testing in rubber manufacturing and compounding.
- Analytical and materials laboratories monitoring manganese levels to assess potential catalytic degradation risks in natural and synthetic rubbers.
- Research labs studying rubber aging, stabilization, and effects of trace metals.
- Suppliers and purchasers requiring standardized test data for specifications and compliance.
