ISO 7886-1:2017 specifies requirements and test methods for verifying the design of empty sterile single-use hypodermic syringes, with or without needle, made of plastic or other materials and intended for the aspiration and injection of fluids after filling by the end-users. This document does not provide requirements for lot release. The syringes are primarily for use in humans. Sterile syringes specified in this document are intended for use immediately after filling and are not intended to contain the medicament for extended periods of time. It excludes syringes for use with insulin (see ISO 8537), single-use syringes made of glass, syringes for use with power-driven syringe pumps, syringes pre-filled by the manufacturer, and syringes intended to be stored after filling (e.g. in a kit for filling by a pharmacist). Hypodermic syringes without a needle specified in this document are intended for use with hypodermic needles specified in ISO 7864.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 7886-1:2017 - Sterile hypodermic syringes for single use - Part 1: Syringes for manual use - specifies performance requirements and test methods to verify the design of empty, sterile, single-use hypodermic syringes (with or without needles) intended for manual aspiration and injection after filling by the end user. The standard is performance‑based, focused on design verification rather than lot release, and applies primarily to syringes for human use that are intended to be used immediately after filling.
Key topics and technical requirements
The standard covers essential design and test topics, including:
- General requirements for syringe design, manufacture and sterilization practices.
- Materials and compatibility guidance (materials are not prescriptively specified; manufacturers must ensure compatibility with intended injection fluids).
- Graduated scale and tolerance - requirements for markings, scale position and capacity tolerances.
- Barrel, nozzle and plunger design - dimensional, fit and performance expectations for barrels, flanges, nozzles (including conical fittings) and plunger/plunger stopper assemblies.
- Performance tests such as:
- Dead space determination (residual volume after injection).
- Air and liquid leakage tests (air leakage during aspiration, liquid leakage under compression).
- Force to operate the piston (operational force limits and test method).
- Freedom from separation of plunger components and fit in barrel.
- Lubricant and silicone: guidance on lubrication, and informative test for silicone quantity.
- Packaging and labelling: unit, multiple‑unit and user packaging requirements, information supplied by the manufacturer, and specifics for self‑contained syringe units.
- Normative and informative annexes providing test methods: extract preparation, leakage tests, dead space method, piston force method, silicone quantity and related procedures.
Applications and who uses it
ISO 7886-1 is used by:
- Medical device manufacturers designing and validating single‑use sterile syringes.
- Quality and regulatory teams preparing technical files and ensuring compliance with international performance requirements.
- Test laboratories performing design verification and performance testing.
- Procurement and clinical engineers assessing syringe specifications for hospitals and clinics.
- Regulatory agencies and auditors reviewing conformity and usability considerations.
This part excludes insulin syringes (see ISO 8537), glass syringes, syringes for syringe pumps, manufacturer pre‑filled syringes, and syringes intended for long‑term storage. Hypodermic needles referenced conform to ISO 7864.
