Abstract
Overview
ISO 789-7:1991 - Agricultural tractors - Test procedures - Part 7: Axle power determination defines standardized procedures for measuring the power available at the driven axle(s) of wheeled or track‑laying agricultural tractors. The part covers scope, measurement units and tolerances, general test requirements and reporting. Annex A (specimen test report) is normative and integral to the standard; Annexes B, C, D (reference fuels) and E are informative only.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Procedures for determining axle power for tractors with one or two driven axles.
- Measurement units & tolerances: The standard specifies the units and acceptable tolerances for key measurements (examples included in the text are rotational frequency in rev/min, time, distance, force, torque, mass, atmospheric pressure and temperatures).
- Test setup:
- All driven axles are coupled to a dynamometer; engine governor set for maximum engine speed.
- Do not alter variable parasitic devices (variable‑speed fan, intermittent hydraulic/electrical loads) unless operator procedure permits.
- Ancillary equipment may be disconnected only when practicable by the operator without tools.
- Transmission and torque control:
- Measurements across transmission ratios covering the manufacturer‑recommended forward speeds (typically 3–16 km/h), using a minimum of six ratios.
- Tractors with torque converters must be tested with converter engaged and locked out (if lock‑out is available).
- For tractors with non‑lockable differentials, torques or wheel speeds are controlled so mean peripheral speeds differ by less than 5% (using dynamic radius indices per ISO 4251‑1).
- For two‑axle drive tractors, tests include several power distributions and controlled torque increases until rated engine speed or maximum permissible axle torque is reached.
- Fuel, lubricants and operating conditions:
- Diesel and spark‑ignition reference fuels are identified (CEC reference fuels referenced in annexes).
- Lubricants in accordance with ISO 3448 viscosity classification or equivalent details recorded.
- Ambient and engine intake air temperatures, atmospheric pressure, humidity, coolant and oil temperatures, and fuel temperature must be recorded.
- Reporting: Annex A provides a specimen test report template that is mandatory to use as part of the test documentation.
Applications and users
- Tractor manufacturers and R&D teams for product validation and performance comparison.
- Independent test laboratories and certification bodies performing standardized axle power measurements.
- Agricultural equipment engineers optimizing transmission, torque distribution and driveline design.
- Fleet operators and procurement specialists comparing tractor models on measured axle power and fuel consumption.
