Specifies a method of vertical impact testing, the testing procedure and how the results of tests should be presented. It may be performed either as a single test to investigate the effects of vertical impact or as a part of a sequence of tests designed to measure the ability of a sack to withstand a distribution system that includes a vertical impact hazard. The principle of the method is raising the filled sack above a rigid surface and releasing to strike this surface after a free fall, the atmospheric conditions, the height of the drop and the position of the package being set in advance.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 7965-2:1993 is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies a method for vertical impact (drop) testing of sacks made from thermoplastic flexible film. This standard outlines the complete testing procedure, requirements for apparatus, conditioning of samples, procedures for lifting and dropping, result presentation, and guidelines on reporting. The primary objective of ISO 7965-2 is to determine the ability of thermoplastic sacks to withstand handling and impact during distribution, making it essential for quality assurance in the packaging industry.
Key Topics
ISO 7965-2:1993 covers several critical aspects of drop testing for thermoplastic sacks:
- Vertical Impact Testing: Describes procedures for dropping filled sacks from pre-defined heights onto a rigid surface to evaluate resistance to impact.
- Test Methods: Includes progressive drop height, constant drop height, and limit height methods for comprehensive assessment.
- Apparatus Requirements: Specifies equipment such as lifting arrangements, release mechanisms, and impact surfaces that must be used to ensure accurate and repeatable results.
- Sample Preparation: Provides guidance on filling and closing sacks, conditioning samples according to atmospheric standards, and appropriate sampling methods as per ISO 7023 and ISO 2233.
- Drop Positions: Identifies testing on faces, sides, and bottom of the sack to simulate real-world handling and transport conditions.
- Evaluation Criteria: Defines parameters for pass/fail criteria (e.g., spillage), and the need to record detailed information about the test setup and results.
Applications
The practical applications of ISO 7965-2:1993 are extensive within industries that rely on thermoplastic flexible film sacks for product packaging and distribution:
- Packaging Quality Assurance: Ensures that sacks can withstand drops during handling, storage, and transportation, reducing product loss and customer complaints.
- Compliance for Dangerous Goods: Provides a recognized method for testing sacks used for transporting potentially hazardous materials, supporting regulatory compliance for shipments in line with United Nations recommendations and the IMDG Code.
- Supply Chain Optimization: Helps packaging designers and manufacturers evaluate and optimize sack performance, thereby improving cost-effectiveness while maintaining safety and product integrity.
- Laboratory Testing: Used by testing laboratories and quality departments to assess new materials or packaging formats before market introduction.
- Specification for Procurement: Enables buyers to specify and verify sack performance according to internationally accepted standards, ensuring consistency and reliability across suppliers.
Related Standards
ISO 7965-2:1993 references and complements several related standards in the field of packaging and drop testing:
