This document specifies a test method for ensuring the traceability of bulk density, called "mass per hectolitre", measuring instruments through reference to standard measurement instruments. The mass per hectolitre is of commercial importance for grain cereals. Several types of instruments with varying performances exist for measuring it. This document also specifies the performances required of national standards instruments, secondary standards instruments, and measuring instruments used in laboratories or in collection or storage silos.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 7971-2:2019 - "Cereals - Determination of bulk density, called mass per hectolitre - Part 2" defines a practical method of traceability for instruments that measure bulk density (mass per hectolitre) of cereal grains. The standard ensures that measuring instruments used in commerce, laboratories, collection points and storage silos can be referenced back to an international standard instrument, establishing a documented calibration chain and measurement confidence for a parameter of commercial importance in the cereal supply chain.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Traceability chain: Establishes relationships from the international standard instrument → national standard instrument → secondary/internal standard → routine measuring instruments.
- Standard instrument specifications:
- Certified international/national standard: 20 L hopper (as per ISO 7971‑1).
- National standard: measuring container capacity ≥ 1 L; accepts bias or bias+slope corrections.
- Secondary standard: capacity ≥ 750 mL; accepts bias and/or slope corrections.
- Calibration and verification intervals:
- National standard instruments: verified through reference to a certified international or national standard every 10 years.
- Secondary standard instruments: verify and adjust every 2 years.
- Routine measuring instruments: traceability check every 1 year for hand-operated devices and every 2 years for automatic devices.
- Performance criteria:
- Corrections must ensure a slope not significantly different from 1 and an intercept (bias) not significantly different from 0 at the 5% threshold (statistical tests and formulae provided in Annex A).
- Procedures covered: preparation and use of reference test samples, statistical interpretation, adjustment rules, monitoring of instrument performance, and required documentation (analysis certificates and conformity certificates).
- Quality tools: use of control charts and documented decision rules (including bias control) for ongoing performance monitoring.
Practical applications - who uses ISO 7971-2:2019
- National metrology institutes and standards bodies responsible for national standard instruments.
- Calibration laboratories and certification bodies issuing conformity and analysis certificates.
- Grain elevators, storage silo operators, traders and processors who rely on accurate mass per hectolitre for commercial transactions and quality specification.
- Instrument manufacturers and service engineers implementing calibration, adjustment and verification procedures.
- Testing laboratories applying traceable measurement methods in quality control and trade.
