This document specifies the requirements for transport unit identifiers (TUID). These requirements supplement those of ISO 8000-115. The following are within the scope of this document: — the methods used to identify the originator of a potential shipment; — the methods used to identify the origin and destination locations of a potential shipment; — the requirements for the representation of the originator, origin, and destination locations of a potential shipment in a single identifier. The following are outside the scope of this document: — the methods used to identify shipments in the transport phase; — the identification of the goods movement phase.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 8000-119:2026 – Data quality - Part 119: Application of ISO 8000-115 to transport unit identifiers establishes the requirements for creating and encoding transport unit identifiers (TUIDs) to support data quality in the negotiation phase of logistics and transport operations. This international standard supplements ISO 8000-115, focusing on the unique challenges associated with identifying potential shipments before the physical transport phase begins.
By defining standardized methods for representing the originator, origin, and destination within a single identifier, ISO 8000-119 facilitates unambiguous data exchange across diverse organizational systems and between trading partners. As supply chain digitization becomes increasingly important, reliable and interoperable TUIDs enable businesses to improve operational efficiency, traceability, and collaboration during the load-matching and booking process.
Key Topics
- Transport Unit Identifiers (TUID): Requirements for the format and encoding of unique identifiers for potential shipments.
- Supplemental Requirements: How ISO 8000-119 extends ISO 8000-115 specifically for transport and logistics contexts.
- Identification Methods: Standardized approaches to identify the shipment originator and the origin and destination locations before shipments are dispatched.
- Single Identifier Representation: Ensuring that the originator, origin, and destination details are captured in a unified TUID for effective negotiation and tracking.
- Data Quality in Pre-Transport Phases: The importance of structured, machine-readable data to support digital processes ahead of physical shipping activities.
Applications
ISO 8000-119:2026 is designed to address challenges in transport logistics, particularly in the negotiation and pre-booking phase, where clear identification of potential shipments is critical. Key practical applications include:
- Freight and Load Matching: Enables shippers and carriers to efficiently reference, track, and negotiate shipment opportunities using unambiguous identifiers.
- Digital Transformation of Supply Chains: Supports automation and integration of transport management systems (TMS), improving data quality for processes such as quoting, bidding, and contract logistics.
- Data Interoperability: Facilitates seamless data exchange between information systems within and across organizational boundaries, helping prevent miscommunication and duplicate bookings.
- Auditability and Traceability: Provides a clear reference for business records and regulatory compliance, ensuring shipment data is credible and traceable back to its source.
- Enhanced Decision-Making: Delivers high-quality, structured information, enabling human and automated systems to make faster, more reliable transport decisions.
Related Standards
The development and application of ISO 8000-119:2026 are supported by a network of related international standards, including:
- ISO 8000-115: Master data exchange of quality identifiers - the core standard underlying TUID requirements.
- ISO 8000-2: Provides the vocabulary foundation for data quality discussions.
- ISO 8000-118: Specifies requirements for natural location identifiers (NLI), utilized in encoding transport origins and destinations.
- ISO 8601-1: Sets rules for the representation of date and time in digital interchange, used within TUIDs.
- ISO 8000 Series: Encompasses broader data quality management, including data governance, characteristic data exchange, profiling, and quality measurement.
Implementing ISO 8000-119 within supply chains helps ensure alignment with best practices for data quality, operational interoperability, and digital logistics transformation, providing strong business value throughout the shipment lifecycle.
