The density is meassured at 25 degrees centigrade by a pyknometric method after degassing under vacuum. Calcined coke may be treated with different types of oil in order to avoid the formation of dust during loading and transportation. The present method does not provide for this elemination of traces of oil which may be present in the sample.

Degassing and filling:

Evacuate to 1.3 ± 0.3 kPa for ~~15 minutes (ensures precision ±0.004 g/ml). For lower precision (~~±0.01 g/ml) a pressure of 2.6 ± 0.3 kPa may be used.
Add xylene dropwise, continue evacuation while shaking until bubble evolution stops (up to ~60 min).

Calibration & precision:

Pyknometer must be calibrated at 25 °C; mass precision ±0.0001 g.
Results are the mean of 8 to 10 determinations; repeatability r = ±0.004 g/ml, reproducibility R = ±0.006 g/ml.
