NOTE Clause A.2 contains guidance or rationale for this clause. This document specifies the common test methods to evaluate the performance requirements for small-bore connectors specified in the ISO and IEC 80369 series as well as the ISO 18250 series.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 80369-20:2024 - Small-bore connectors for liquids and gases in healthcare applications - Part 20: Common test methods - defines the common laboratory and functional test methods used to evaluate performance requirements for small-bore connectors specified across the ISO/IEC 80369 series and the ISO 18250 series. Published in 2024 (second edition), the document was prepared by ISO in collaboration with IEC and consolidates standardized procedures (informative annexes) for type testing connectors used in medical devices and healthcare fluid systems. (Note: Clause A.2 contains guidance/rationale for the scope.)
Key technical topics and requirements
- Purpose: Establish repeatable, objective test methods to verify connector performance (type tests), with test reports and environmental preconditioning requirements.
- Leakage testing:
- Leakage by pressure decay (Annex B) - uses change in pressure as the acceptance criterion (replaces older leakage-rate calculations).
- Falling drop positive-pressure liquid leakage (Annex C).
- Subatmospheric-pressure air leakage (Annex D) - applies subatmospheric pressure internally and uses pressure change evaluation.
- Mechanical integrity:
- Resistance to separation from axial load (Annex F)
- Resistance to separation from unscrewing (Annex G)
- Resistance to overriding (Annex H)
- Disconnection by unscrewing (Annex I)
- Material and durability tests:
- Stress cracking (Annex E)
- User-safety and clinical-relevance tests:
- Air leakage during aspiration (Annex K) - newly introduced to address aspiration-related leakage risks.
- Statistical and reporting: Guidance for generating variable data for statistical analysis (Annex J) and extended requirements for test reports and environmental conditions (temperature and humidity preconditioning).
- Informative guidance: Annex A provides rationale and application guidance; Annex L maps to IMDRF essential principles.
Practical applications
- Validate connector designs for leak-tightness, mechanical retention, and material durability.
- Support regulatory submissions, risk management, and conformity assessment for medical devices that use small-bore connectors (infusion sets, catheters, respiratory lines, enteral feeding systems).
- Standardize laboratory procedures in test houses and quality-control labs to produce reproducible type-test data.
Who should use this standard
- Medical device manufacturers and design engineers
- Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies
- Regulatory and quality assurance teams
- Standards developers and procurement specialists concerned with connector interchangeability and patient safety
