This part of IS0 8037 specifies requirements for dimensions, thickness, optical properties and tolerances for microscope slides used for transmitted light microscopy in the visible spectral range'). NOTE - This part of IS0 8037 does not cover requirements for suitability for fluorescence microscopy.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 8037-1:1986 is an international standard that defines the dimensions, thickness, optical properties and marking requirements for microscope slides used in transmitted‑light microscopy in the visible spectral range (400–760 nm). It is intended to ensure consistent slide geometry and optical quality so slides are compatible with condensers and a range of observation techniques (bright field, dark field, phase contrast, interference contrast). The part explicitly does not cover suitability for fluorescence microscopy.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Requirements apply to microscope slides for transmitted‑light observation in the visible spectrum (400–760 nm).
- Dimensions and tolerances: The standard specifies the nominal length and width values and tolerances for standard slide types (see the standard’s dimensions table for exact values).
- Thickness (s): A nominal thickness is defined for slides to control image quality and condenser working distance; the document gives a published thickness value (see ISO 8037-1 for the exact figure and tolerance).
- Optical properties:
- Principal refractive index: specified as n = 1.53 ± 0.02 (measured at the green mercury e‑line, λ = 546.07 nm, per ISO 7944).
- Slides must present adequate optical homogeneity and refractive behavior so the field diaphragm and condenser optics form the intended images across common microscopy methods.
- Marking and packaging: Packages must be labeled with
- slide dimensions or designation,
- average number of slides per package,
- manufacturer/supplier name or mark and country of origin,
- a statement of conformity to ISO 8037-1.
- Limitations: This part covers geometry and optical parameters; material quality tests and fluorescence suitability are outside its scope and addressed elsewhere or in future parts.
Practical applications
- Ensures interchangeability and predictable performance of slides across microscopes and condenser designs.
- Helps manufacturers produce slides that maintain image quality at large condenser apertures and minimize optical artifacts.
- Enables laboratories and procurement teams to specify slides that meet defined optical and dimensional criteria for reliable imaging and archival preparations.
- Supports microscope and condenser designers in matching mechanical clearances and optical path requirements.
Who uses this standard
- Slide manufacturers and quality control engineers
- Laboratory managers and procurement specialists
- Microscope and optical‑system designers
- Standards and compliance officers in medical, biological, and research institutions
