This document specifies the characteristics of polyethylene film, commonly called polyethylene sleeving, used as additional protection against corrosion for ductile iron pipelines, particularly when laid in aggressive soil conditions. This film, the efficiency of which has been proved by experience, takes the form of a sheet or tube fitted around the pipes and fittings, on-site, immediately before pipe-laying.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 8180:2020 - "Ductile iron pipelines - Polyethylene sleeving for site application" specifies the properties, dimensions and use of polyethylene film (polyethylene sleeving) applied on-site as additional corrosion protection for ductile iron pipelines. The document covers material requirements, mechanical performance, marking, storage and recommended installation methods for sleeving used especially in aggressive soil or wet trench conditions.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Raw material: Polyethylene or polyethylene/ethylene-olefin copolymer blends with density 910–935 kg/m³ (ISO 1183-1). Regenerated (recycled) products are permitted if they meet the standard.
- Additives: UV stabilizers (e.g., carbon black 2–3% by mass if used); antioxidants ≤ 0.5%; impurities < 0.1%; no plasticizers or fillers.
- Dimensions: Minimum flat widths are specified per nominal pipe diameter (DN) in a tabulated form (DN range covered up to DN 2600). Nominal film thickness ≥ 200 µm with a negative tolerance not exceeding 10%.
- Mechanical properties:
- Tensile strength ≥ 20 MPa (longitudinal and transverse, ISO 527-3)
- Elongation at break ≥ 500% (ISO 527-3)
- Impact resistance ≥ 900 g (ISO 7765-1)
- Propagation tear resistance ≥ 20 N (ISO 6383-2)
- Marking: Sleeving must be labelled with manufacturer/trademark, year of manufacture, reference to ISO 8180, nominal thickness and applicable pipe diameter range.
- Storage & transport: Packaged and protected from direct sunlight prior to use.
- Use & fitting: Annex A provides practical installation methods for dry trenches and wet or below-water-table conditions, including recommended overlaps (e.g., at least 25 mm at joints), tape securing, repair procedures and backfill precautions.
Applications and Users
ISO 8180:2020 is used by:
- Pipeline designers and corrosion engineers specifying protective encasement for ductile iron mains
- Manufacturers and suppliers of polyethylene sleeving
- Construction contractors and site crews installing ductile iron pipelines
- Utilities, municipal authorities and consultants preparing procurement and acceptance criteria
- Inspectors and quality assurance teams verifying compliance on-site
Practical benefits include documented performance criteria for sleeving selection, consistency in installation practice, and improved long-term corrosion protection for buried ductile iron pipes in aggressive soils or wet environments.
