This document specifies the method to be used to determine the damage caused by striking with a soft and heavy body, the face of a closed-door leaf fixed in its own door frame as part of a door set. This document applies to all doors. The method can also be used with respect to a door leaf submitted for a test in a frame, which the manufacturer considers appropriate to and typical for the intended utilization.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 8270:2023 - Windows and doors: Determination of the resistance to soft and heavy body impact for doors specifies a laboratory method to assess damage caused by striking the face of a closed door leaf (fixed in its frame or supplied in a typical frame) using a soft, heavy impact body. The standard applies to all types of doors and defines the test apparatus, environmental conditioning, procedure, measurement and reporting requirements to quantify residual deformation after impact.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and applicability: Applies to all doors and to door leaves tested in a frame representative of intended use.
- Test surround: The test surround must be rigid enough not to influence results.
- Impact equipment:
- Impact body mass: (30 ± 0.6) kg.
- Construction: spherical leather bag ≈350 mm diameter filled with dry sand (apparent density ≈1 500 kg/m3) passing a 2 mm sieve.
- Accessories: wires, pulleys, release hook, height-regulating devices.
- Measuring equipment: Dial or digital gauge accurate to 0.01 mm mounted on a reference bar spanning the door leaf width.
- Specimen conditioning: Store and test at 15 °C to 30 °C and 25 % to 75 % relative humidity.
- Procedure highlights:
- Impact point at the centre of the door leaf; remove handle if coincident.
- Measure pre- and post-impact deviation in flatness across the width at the impact height (to nearest 0.1 mm).
- Position impact body so its centre of gravity is perpendicular to the door face; drop height tolerance ±10 mm determines impact energy.
- Results and reporting:
- Record residual deformation (flatness deviation) and any visible damage.
- Test report must reference ISO 8270, identify the door or set, detail dimensions, materials, glazing, frame/hardware, test conditions, impact energy, number/position of impacts, deviations from procedure and laboratory details.
Applications and who uses it
ISO 8270:2023 is used to:
- Verify the impact resistance of doors in product development and quality control.
- Support type testing for manufacturers aiming to demonstrate robustness under human or object impact.
- Provide objective data for specifiers, architects and procurement teams selecting doors for high-traffic or safety-critical environments (schools, hospitals, public buildings).
- Guide independent testing laboratories that perform door impact testing for certification, compliance, and contractual verification.
Typical users: door manufacturers, testing laboratories, façade and building-envelope engineers, architects, safety and facilities managers, and regulatory/specification authors.
