This International Standard specifies the methods for determining the maximum exposure time that a given sensitized material can receive from a given safelight without affecting the quality of the final image. It also specifies the records which shall be maintained for the components of a safelight and its operating environment.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 8374:2001 - "Photography - Determination of ISO safelight conditions" defines standardized methods to determine safe safelight exposure for sensitized photographic materials. The standard specifies how to measure the maximum safelight exposure time (safetime) a material can receive from a given safelight without producing a detectable change in the final image. It also requires record‑keeping for safelight components and the operating environment to ensure repeatable, auditable safelight conditions.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Purpose: Determine when safelight exposure affects image-forming characteristics and define the ISO maximum safelight condition (half the geometric mean between the smallest detectable change and the adjacent maximum no‑change exposure).
- Two test methods:
- Method 1 (general): Used when the safelight/material relationship is unknown. Uses multiple samples and step exposures to find the most sensitive image densities and exposure order.
- Method 2 (in situ/known relationship): Uses a single sheet and a uniform exposure simulating the density most sensitive to safelight; suitable after Method 1 characterization.
- Annex A (normative): Safelight testing using a half‑tone image for materials normally exposed to halftone patterns.
- Evaluation: Both subjective (visual) and objective (instrumental) evaluation procedures are specified. If using a densitometer, accuracy/repeatability must be better than 0.005 density or 0.5% of the density, whichever is greater.
- Maintenance & records: Required recording of safelight source type (LED, tungsten, sodium vapour, etc.), wattage/amp draw, filter type and age, fixture finish, distance to material, exposure times, processing data, and reflectance/geometry for indirect illumination. Any change in these elements requires re-evaluation.
- Processing conditions: The document includes a test method specifically for safelight conditions during processing stages.
Applications - who uses ISO 8374
- Photographic film and paper manufacturers (quality control and product specification)
- Photographic laboratories and darkroom managers (safe handling and processing)
- Imaging/printing facilities using light‑sensitive materials
- Conservation and archival labs handling light‑sensitive media
- Standards and compliance teams documenting safelight environments Practical benefits include consistent safelight selection, reduced product variability, safer darkroom procedures, and defensible records for audits or production control.
