Gives special safety rules for storage equipment for loose bulk materials, such as hoppers, silos, storage bins and bunkers, and bin gates. These safety rules apply regardless of the use for which the equipment is intended.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 8456:1985 - Storage equipment for loose bulk materials - Safety code - provides special safety rules for storage equipment such as hoppers, silos, storage bins, bunkers and bin gates. Intended as an adjunct to general machine safety, the standard applies regardless of the intended use of the equipment and covers design, manufacture, installation, operation and maintenance aspects relevant to bulk storage safety.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Design and construction
- Components must be sized to withstand expected dead loads, stored materials, supported machinery and occasional overloads; both static and dynamic effects are considered.
- Stability must be ensured under all contractual load conditions.
- Clearances and access
- Minimum vehicle clearance distances when materials are removed by vehicles are specified (examples in the standard include 500 mm and 700 mm depending on obstacle type).
- Manholes, inspection doors and detachable parts must be lockable and conform to national requirements.
- Bin gates and discharge
- Bin gates must ensure interruption of material flow, prevent accidental opening, and allow supervised vehicle loading.
- Manual operation should not require excessive force; guards or screens must cover full upper openings where applicable.
- Pneumatic filling / emptying
- Pneumatically filled or emptied vessels must withstand maximum permitted pressure/vacuum and use pressure-relief devices, filters and monitoring as required.
- Safety devices controlling pressure/vacuum (safety valves, bursting discs) must be regularly checked.
- Explosion and fire hazards
- Where explosive or heat‑generating materials may be present, provisions for controlled venting, inerting or suppression are required, and explosion consequences must be limited.
- Operation and maintenance
- Routine testing of automatic level-stop devices and other safety systems is required.
- Entry into hoppers/silos requires specific authorization, continuous supervision and appropriate PPE (safety harnesses, breathing apparatus, anti‑static clothing where relevant).
- Transporting people on conveyors feeding directly into hoppers/silos is strictly forbidden.
- Signage and documentation
- Equipment must be permanently and legibly marked with manufacturer, year, serial number and operational warnings. Operating and maintenance instructions must be provided.
Applications and Users
ISO 8456 is relevant to:
- Manufacturers and designers of storage equipment for loose bulk materials
- Plant engineers and safety managers in industries handling bulk solids (agriculture, mining, cement, chemicals, food grains)
- Installers, contractors and maintenance teams responsible for silo/hopper installations
- Safety auditors and regulators assessing compliance with bulk storage safety codes
Related Standards
- ISO 1819 - Continuous mechanical handling equipment - Safety code - General rules
- ISO 7149 - Continuous handling equipment - Safety code - Special rules
- Applicable national/regional regulations for pressure vessels, explosions and workplace safety
ISO 8456:1985 helps integrate practical safety measures into the lifecycle of bulk storage systems, reducing risks from overpressure, collapse, entrapment and explosions while supporting compliance with broader safety frameworks.
