ISO 8458-2 specifies requirements for cold-drawn non-alloy steel wire for the manufacture of mechanical springs for static duty and dynamic duty applications, complying with the general requirements of ISO 8458-1.
Abstract
Overview - ISO 8458-2:2002 (steel wire for mechanical springs)
ISO 8458-2:2002 specifies technical requirements for patented cold-drawn non-alloy steel wire used to manufacture mechanical springs for both static duty and dynamic duty applications. It complements the general rules in ISO 8458-1 and references steel-rod and coating standards (ISO 16120 series, ISO 7989). The standard covers classification, dimensions, material chemistry, surface finish, mechanical and technological properties, and inspection/testing requirements for spring wire.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and classification: Defines tensile-strength grades (SL, SM, SH for static; DM, DH for dynamic) and nominal diameter ranges commonly available for spring manufacture.
- Dimensions and supply:
- Dimensional tolerances follow ISO 8458-1.
- Single-length coils from one heat; welds allowed only prior to final patenting unless agreed otherwise.
- Cast and straightness requirements for coiled and cut lengths (expressed as maximum axial displacement and straightness deviations for 500 mm and 1 000 mm test lengths).
- Material and chemical composition:
- Wire made from steel conforming to ISO 16120-1; specific grade requirements reference ISO 16120-2 and ISO 16120-4.
- Heat-analysis composition ranges for C, Si, Mn and limits for P, S, Cu are provided (see Table 2).
- Coating and surface finish:
- Options include lime, borax, phosphate, metallic coatings (copper, zinc, Zn/Al alloy). Minimum coating masses for zinc or zinc/aluminium alloys are specified by diameter (Table 3).
- Note: coating processes can affect ductility and dynamic performance.
- Surface quality:
- Stricter surface defect limits for dynamic-duty wires (radial seam depth not greater than 1% of nominal diameter; limits on decarburization for DM/DH).
- Mechanical properties:
- Detailed tensile strength ranges by nominal diameter and tensile grade are tabulated (Table 4), allowing designers to select appropriate wire for required performance.
- Inspection and testing:
- Test methods, extent of testing and acceptance criteria are defined to ensure conformity.
Applications and who uses ISO 8458-2
- Spring manufacturers producing compression, tension, torsion and precision springs.
- Design engineers selecting spring wire by tensile strength, diameter and surface finish.
- Quality/production inspectors and procurement professionals verifying material certificates, coating mass and inspection/test results.
- Suppliers of spring wire and component manufacturers who must meet dynamic-duty endurance requirements.
