This document provides requirements to identify visible imperfections and defines three preparation grades for welds, edges and surfaces of steel to assist in achieving efficient corrosion protection. Such imperfections can be visible before or can become visible after an abrasive blast cleaning process. NOTE Although this document has been developed specifically for preparation of steel, the defined preparation grades will generally be appropriate for use when preparing other metal surfaces e.g. aluminium, castings, if agreed.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 8501-3:2025, "Preparation of steel substrates before application of paints and related products - Visual assessment of surface cleanliness - Part 3", defines visual assessment requirements and preparation grades for welds, edges and other surface imperfections on steel. Published as the third edition in 2025, the standard helps ensure efficient corrosion protection by identifying visible imperfections that can be present before - or revealed after - abrasive blast cleaning. Although developed for steel, the preparation grades can generally be applied to other metals (e.g., aluminium) if agreed.
Key technical topics and requirements
- Preparation grades P1–P3
- P1 (Minimal): Minimum preparation; basic removal of loose defects.
- P2 (Medium): Most imperfections are remedied; continuity and removal of adhering spatter/slag expected.
- P3 (High): All significant imperfections are remedied; smooth weld topography and rounded/chamfered edges may be required.
- Types of imperfections covered
- Weld spatter, welding slag, discontinuous welds, weld porosity and pores, weld profile/ripple, undercut, lack of fusion/shrinkage grooves, end craters, and edge defects (sharp edges, fins, slag/loose scale).
- Visual assessment
- Inspections both before and after cleaning (e.g., abrasive blast cleaning per ISO 8504 series) are recommended to capture imperfections that become visible only after pretreatment.
- Dressing and handling
- Definitions and limits for dressing (grinding to remove pores, spatter, sharp edges) and guidance that dressing after welding approval must not violate welding form/tolerance requirements.
- Selection criteria
- Required preparation grade should be chosen based on the desired coating longevity and the environmental corrosivity.
- Limitations and notes
- The standard does not specify protective coating systems or detailed surface quality for particular products. P3 may not be achievable on severely rusted surfaces (e.g., rust grade D per ISO 8501-1).
Practical applications and users
ISO 8501-3 is used by:
- Steel fabricators and welders to prepare welded components.
- Coating specifiers and corrosion engineers selecting pretreatment levels.
- Quality managers, welding inspectors and contractors for inspection criteria.
- Designers, purchasers and logistics managers coordinating surface acceptance criteria prior to painting. Typical applications include structural steelwork, piping, heavy fabrication and any welded steel component requiring durable protective coatings.
