Specifies requirements for rectangular or square cast iron surface plates ranging from 160 mm x 100 mm to 2500 mm x 1600 mm, as preferred sizes, in four grades of accuracy 0, 1, 2 and 3.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 8512-1:1990 specifies requirements for cast iron surface plates used as planar datums and working surfaces in inspection, layout and metrology. The standard covers preferred rectangular and square sizes from 160 mm × 100 mm up to 2 500 mm × 1 600 mm, and defines four accuracy grades (0, 1, 2, 3). It addresses material, manufacture, finishing, support, marking and testing, and includes informative annexes on use, care, testing and loading.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Size and grades: Preferred sizes are listed for a wide range of rectangular and square plates; flatness tolerances vary with plate size and the chosen accuracy grade (see table 1 in the standard).
- Material: Requires good quality close‑grained plain or alloy cast iron at least equivalent to grade 250 (ISO 185); castings must be sound and free of porosity.
- Stress relief: Plates of grades 0 and 1 up to 400 mm × 250 mm shall be stress‑relieved after casting and rough machining; stress relief is recommended for larger plates and manufacturers should provide details on request.
- Top finish: Grade 0 and 1 tops are to be finished by scraping (or an equivalent process producing a scraping-like surface); grades 2 and 3 may be scraped or machined.
- Support and rigidity: Surface plates shall be supported on three feet (plates >1000 × 630 mm also require safety feet). Ribbing and total depth (top + framing) must ensure sufficient rigidity and limit deflection under concentrated loading.
- Projection, edges and bearing area: Tops of plates ≥400 × 250 mm shall project at least 25 mm beyond framing; edges/corners must be rounded (≥2 mm radius) or chamfered. Minimum bearing area percentages are specified by grade (higher for grade 0).
- Testing and inspection: The standard references test methods for overall flatness and local-area flatness and provides informative annexes describing practical test approaches (datum gauges, straight-edge and comparator techniques).
- Marking: Plates must be permanently marked with manufacturer, standard number and accuracy grade.
Applications and users
ISO 8512-1 is used where a stable, well‑defined planar reference is required:
- Inspection and quality control laboratories
- Toolrooms, jig and fixture manufacturing
- Precision assembly and layout work
- Calibration service providers and metrology labs
- Manufacturers specifying production inspection datums
Specifying ISO 8512-1 cast iron surface plates helps ensure consistent flatness tolerances, predictable thermal and mechanical behavior, and standardized testing and care procedures.
