ISO 8528-7:2017 specifies the requirements and parameters for the specification and design of a reciprocating internal combustion (RIC) engine driven generating set, with reference to the definitions given in ISO 8528‑1 to ISO 8528‑6. It applies to alternating current (a.c.) generating sets driven by RIC engines for land and marine use, excluding generating sets used on aircraft or to propel land vehicles and locomotives. For some specific applications (for example, essential hospital supplies, high-rise buildings, etc.) supplementary requirements may be necessary. The provisions of this document are intended to be regarded as a basis. For other reciprocating-type prime movers (e.g. sewage gas engines, steam engines), the provisions of this document are intended to be used as a basis.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 8528-7:2017 - "Reciprocating internal combustion engine driven alternating current generating sets - Part 7: Technical declarations for specification and design" defines the information and declarations required to specify and design a.c. generating sets driven by reciprocating internal combustion (RIC) engines. It applies to land and marine generating sets (excluding aircraft and propulsion for vehicles/locomotives) and provides a standardised technical questionnaire and data set that manufacturers and customers use to agree design, performance and safety parameters.
Key SEO terms: ISO 8528-7:2017, reciprocating internal combustion engine, generating sets, technical declarations, specification and design, a.c. generating sets.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Technical declarations and responsibilities: Distinguishes declarations to be provided by the customer/user, declarations delivered by the manufacturer, and items requiring mutual agreement.
- Comprehensive specification checklist: Table 1 and Annex A list essential data such as power demand, power factor, rated voltage/frequency, load profile, operating mode (continuous/limited), and performance class.
- Engine and fuel parameters: Fuel type and supply, fuel system safety, starting system, engine cooling, speed and governor characteristics, fuel consumption and heat balance.
- Generator and electrical data: Excitation and voltage regulation, generator cooling and mechanical protection, earthing system, control-gear/switchgear, fault-current rating and instrumentation.
- Site and environmental criteria: Ambient temperature, altitude, humidity, dust/sand, vibration, chemical pollution, and marine-specific conditions.
- Operation and maintenance: Mode of operation (prime/standby), start-up time categories (no-break, short-break, long-break), maintenance intervals, auxiliary power consumption and battery requirements.
- Testing and conformity: References required test methods and classification society requirements where applicable; includes normative annexes for technical questionnaires and generating set data.
Practical Applications
- Use ISO 8528-7:2017 to create a clear, unambiguous specification for procuring or manufacturing RIC engine driven a.c. generating sets.
- Standardises information flow between owner/operators, system integrators, manufacturers and classification societies for land-based plants, marine vessels and offshore installations.
- Helps engineers and project managers define environmental, electrical and mechanical constraints early in design to avoid scope gaps, rework or non-compliance.
- Supports procurement, tendering documents, FAT/HAT planning and integration with plant control and protection systems.
Who Uses This Standard
- Generator manufacturers and OEMs
- Power system and control engineers
- Marine/offshore design teams and shipbuilders
- Facility managers (hospitals, data centres, high-rise buildings)
- Classification societies, procurement specialists and test laboratories
