ISO 8539:2009 specifies general requirements for forged steel components of Grade 8 up to 63 t working load limit, mainly for use in chain slings, steel wire rope slings, and textile slings intended for lifting objects, materials or goods. ISO 8539:2009 is not applicable to hand-forged components and welded links, and neither is it applicable to other welded components.

ISO 8539:2009 - Forged steel lifting components for use with Grade 8 chain - specifies general safety, material, heat‑treatment and testing requirements for forged steel lifting components (up to 63 t working load limit) used mainly in chain slings, steel wire rope slings and textile slings. It defines mechanical properties, verification methods, marking and manufacturer documentation to ensure reliable performance in lifting applications. Note: ISO 8539:2009 excludes hand‑forged components and welded links or other welded components.

- Fatigue resistance - for components up to 32 t WLL, at least 20 000 cycles at specified force range (max = 1.5 × WLL; min positive ≤ 3 kN; frequency ≤ 25 Hz).
- Manufacture and workmanship: Forgings shall be hot‑forged in one piece, finish free of sharp edges, and welding is restricted (only non-load-bearing or pre‑heat‑treatment welds allowed).
- Verification and testing: Type examination, static and fatigue tests (three samples per size/design), manufacturing tests, and testing by a competent person. Traceability codes and marking requirements are specified.
- Documentation: Manufacturer’s declaration and instructions for use required.
