This document specifies methods for the determination of the total mass per unit area, total pile mass per unit area, and mass of pile per unit area above the substrate, and for the calculation of measured surface pile density and measured pile fibre volume ratio of textile floor coverings.
Abstract
Overview - ISO 8543:2020 (Textile floor coverings - Methods for determination of mass)
ISO 8543:2020 specifies standardized laboratory methods to determine mass-related properties of textile floor coverings. The standard covers measurement of total mass per unit area, total pile mass per unit area, mass of pile above the substrate, and the calculation of measured surface pile density and measured pile fibre volume ratio. It includes requirements for specimen selection, conditioning, apparatus, procedures and test reporting, and applies to conventional carpets, machine-made coverings and artificial turf (with clarified provisions for turf).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope of measurements: total mass (entire specimen), pile mass (pile yarn separated from other components), pile mass above substrate, and derived density/volume ratio metrics.
- Specimen selection & size: specimens selected per ISO 1957; minimum cut-out recommended at least 200 mm × 200 mm (and 15 tuft rows) with sides aligned to production direction.
- Conditioning: specimens must be conditioned in a standard atmosphere per ISO 139 until constant mass (successive hourly weighings over 3 h within 1%).
- Apparatus: sharp knife or punching machine, ruler (mm), dissecting needles/forceps, and a balance with 0.01 g resolution and 0.1 g precision.
- Accuracy & sample size: start with four specimens; compute coefficient of variation (CV). If CV > 4% additional specimens are prescribed to reach 95% confidence limits (detailed CV thresholds given in Clause 5).
- Calculations: convert specimen mass (g) and area (mm2) to g/m2 using the area conversion (mass × 10^6 / area in mm2). Measured surface pile density is obtained under a pressure of 2.0 kPa.
- Reporting: test reports must state method clause used, sample identity, atmosphere, number of specimens, individual and mean results, and CV.
Applications - who uses ISO 8543 and why
- Manufacturers of carpets, rugs and artificial turf - for quality control, product specification and R&D.
- Testing laboratories - to produce repeatable, accredited test reports.
- Specifiers and procurement teams - to compare products and verify supplier claims (mass per unit area, pile content and pile volume fraction).
- Standards committees and regulators - to harmonize test methods and conformity assessment.
- Researchers and designers - to evaluate material performance, durability and material usage (pile fibre proportion).
Practical uses include product labeling, comparative performance testing, material cost assessment, quality assurance and verification for commercial, residential and sports flooring.
