Abstract
Overview
ISO 8571-3:1988 - "Information processing systems - Open Systems Interconnection - File Transfer, Access and Management - Part 3: File Service Definition" defines the file service layer of the FTAM family within the OSI framework. It specifies the abstract service model, service primitives, parameters and behaviours required to support file transfer, access and management functions between distributed systems. The standard documents the service model (providers and users), service levels, regimes, functional units and service classes without prescribing transport-level protocol encodings (those are in other parts of the ISO 8571 series).
Key topics and technical requirements
- File Service model: roles of File Service Provider and File Service Users; levels of service and regimes used to control file interactions.
- Service primitives and sequences: detailed definitions of primitives (operations) and allowed sequences for establishing regimes, file selection, open/close, management and grouped operations.
- Functional units & service classes: decomposition of file service functionality into units and negotiable service classes for capability interworking.
- Bulk Data Transfer (BDT): primitives and sequences for reading, writing and transferring file data, including checkpointing, restart and cancellation semantics.
- File management primitives: attribute read/change, file creation/deletion, selection/deselection and access control elements.
- Recovery & concurrency: mechanisms for recovery, checkpointing/restarting transfers, concurrency control and diagnostic/error reporting.
- Common parameters: accounting, charging, activity identifiers, diagnostics and FADU identity used across services.
- Annexes & diagrams: diagnostic parameter values, attribute-to-primitive mapping, commitment control notes, FTAM control info and state transition diagrams.
Practical applications and users
ISO 8571-3 is valuable for:
- Protocol designers and implementers building FTAM-compliant file-transfer and file-access systems.
- System architects and integrators requiring interoperable file services across heterogeneous OSI-based environments.
- Enterprise IT and legacy system teams maintaining or interfacing with FTAM/OSI deployments where formal file management semantics (commitment control, checkpointing, BDT) are required.
- Test labs and conformance assessors validating behaviour, sequences and diagnostics against the standard.
- Software vendors creating middleware or gateways that bridge FTAM services to modern file-transfer solutions.
Using ISO 8571-3 helps ensure consistent semantics for file transfer, file access and file management, improving interoperability and predictable error/recovery behaviour in distributed systems.
