ISO 8596:2017 specifies a range of Landolt ring optotypes and describes a method for measuring distance visual acuity under photopic conditions for the purposes of certification or licensing. ISO 8596:2017 is neither intended as a standard for clinical measurements nor for the certification of blindness or partial sight. Other optotypes used for clinical investigations are described in Annex A for information.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 8596:2017, "Ophthalmic optics - Visual acuity testing - Standard and clinical optotypes and their presentation," defines the standard optotype (Landolt ring) and a method for measuring distance visual acuity under photopic conditions for purposes such as certification or licensing. It is not intended as a clinical measurement standard for diagnosing blindness or partial sight. Annex A provides information on other clinical optotypes for investigative use.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Standard optotype: Specifies the Landolt ring geometry (outer diameter, limb width and gap) and eight gap orientations (horizontal, vertical, four diagonals).
- Visual acuity scales: Supports decimal visual acuity, Snellen fraction, and LogMAR; defines corresponding visual acuity grades (see Table 1 of the standard).
- Optotype sizing and progression: Gap sizes follow a logarithmic progression with a size ratio of 10^(1/10) ≈ 1.2589 (ISO series R10).
- Presentation and spacing: Minimum spacing rules between optotypes depend on acuity grade; test field must extend ≥0.5° around optotypes and background must be uniform to avoid orientation cues.
- Luminance requirements: Surround (chart background) luminance between 80–320 cd/m² (recommended 200 cd/m²); optotype luminance not more than 15% of surround when measured in a darkened room; limits on luminance variability and glare.
- Viewing distance: Minimum 4.0 m between subject entrance pupil and optotype for distance testing.
- Test procedures and pass criteria: Preferred presentations are 5 or 10 optotypes per size; “Pass” requires at least 3/5 or 6/10 correct. Rules for termination and assignment of the visual acuity grade are specified.
- Quality and reporting: Optotypes must have sharply defined contours and consistent contrast. Test reports must reference ISO 8596:2017 and include instrument, acuity grades used, viewing distance, assigned grade, examiner, date and location.
Applications and users
ISO 8596:2017 is used by:
- Certification and licensing authorities (driver licensing, occupational fitness)
- Manufacturers of vision testing charts and automated visual acuity instruments
- Metrology and conformity assessment bodies validating instrument presentation quality
- Researchers comparing optotypes (use Annex A and ISO/TR 19498 for correlation to the Landolt ring)
The standard ensures reproducible, comparable distance visual acuity measurements for regulatory and certification purposes and provides technical requirements for chart design, presentation, luminance control, and reporting.
