This document specifies general requirements for piston-operated volumetric apparatus (POVA). It is applicable to pipettes, burettes, dilutors, dispensers and manually operated precision laboratory syringes. It furthermore defines terms for the use of piston-operated volumetric apparatus and gives user recommendations. This document does not apply to medical products intended for use on humans, e.g. for medical syringes.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 8655-1:2022 is the introductory part of the ISO 8655 series for piston-operated volumetric apparatus (POVA). It defines terminology, sets general requirements, and provides user recommendations for instruments such as pipettes, burettes, dilutors, dispensers and manually operated precision laboratory syringes. The standard clarifies concepts used across the series and establishes baseline expectations for calibration, testing and safe use. (It does not apply to medical products intended for use on humans, e.g., medical syringes.)
Key topics and technical requirements
ISO 8655-1:2022 focuses on foundational topics that support metrology and quality control for liquid handling:
- Terminology - standardized definitions (e.g., mean delivered volume, measurement uncertainty, dead volume, metrological confirmation) to ensure consistent interpretation across manufacturers and laboratories.
- General requirements - high-level rules covering:
- frequency of calibrations and tests
- reporting of measurement errors
- handling of exchangeable parts
- metrological confirmation (procedures to ensure POVA conform to intended use)
- routine testing, maintenance and repair
- criteria for suitability of performance statements and pass/fail determination
- Product information and marking - manufacturer’s user information, decontamination/sterilization guidance and chemical resistance data.
- Factors affecting device selection - interaction with different liquids, use of air-displacement pipettes, immersion depth and dead air/volume considerations.
- References to measurement procedures - the document points to gravimetric, photometric and alternative measurement procedures (ISO 8655-6, -7, -8) for determining delivered volume and estimating measurement uncertainty.
Practical applications and who uses it
ISO 8655-1 is essential for:
- Manufacturers developing and documenting POVA performance and issuing manufacturer declarations.
- Calibration laboratories and test houses performing independent calibration, verification and routine testing.
- Laboratory managers, QC personnel and end-users selecting, operating and maintaining pipettes, burettes and dispensers to meet process tolerances and traceability requirements.
- Regulatory and procurement teams specifying equipment acceptance criteria and conformity to metrological requirements.
Practical benefits include improved measurement traceability, consistent reporting of errors and uncertainties, and clearer guidance for maintenance and user safety.
