This International Standard specifies a spectrometric method for the determination of the permanganate absorption number of caprolactam for industrial use. The permanganate absorption number is a measure of the oxidizable impurities in caprolactam, determined in a buffered neutral aqueous medium under fixed conditions. The method is applicable to purified caprolactam (and intermediates in the caprolactam purification process) with an alkalinity or acidity lower than 0,50 mmol/kg and a PAN value of up to 35.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 8660:2002 is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies a spectrometric method for the determination of the permanganate absorption number (PAN) of caprolactam. This measurement assesses the amount of oxidizable impurities in industrial-grade caprolactam, a key raw material widely used in the production of nylon plastics and fibers. The standard targets purified caprolactam and intermediate purification products with specific limits on alkalinity/acidity and PAN values.
The procedure involves reacting caprolactam samples in a buffered neutral aqueous medium with a standard potassium permanganate solution and measuring absorbance at 420 nm after a fixed reaction time. This method provides a reliable and reproducible indicator of caprolactam purity, crucial for quality control in plastic manufacturing processes.
Key Topics
-
Permanganate Absorption Number (PAN):
PAN quantifies oxidizable impurities in caprolactam by measuring the absorbance difference at 420 nm between the test sample and a blank solution following oxidation by potassium permanganate. -
Spectrometric Technique:
The method relies on UV-visible spectrometry using a 5 cm glass cuvette to measure absorbance at 420 nm, which correlates to the amount of manganese dioxide formed during oxidation. -
Buffered Neutral Medium:
The reaction occurs in a pH 7.0 buffered aqueous solution to eliminate variability caused by sample acidity or alkalinity, improving precision compared to earlier methods. -
Sample Preparation and Conditions:
Samples include solid caprolactam or aqueous solutions (preferably 50% by mass) with precise weighing and solution preparation. Reaction time is strictly controlled at 10 minutes to ensure accurate oxidation of impurities. -
Reagents and Equipment:
High-purity reagents-such as potassium permanganate, sulfuric acid, and buffer salts-and specialized equipment like a spectrometer with monochromatic capability at 420 nm are essential for accurate results. -
Quality Control Measures:
The standard emphasizes proper cleaning of glassware, verification of reagent purity, and consistent measurement timing to avoid interference from manganese dioxide deposits or reagent degradation.
Applications
-
Industrial Caprolactam Quality Control:
Manufacturers use ISO 8660 to monitor impurity levels in caprolactam, ensuring compliance with purity specifications integral to the production of high-performance nylon polymers. -
Process Monitoring:
The method helps control purification steps of caprolactam by detecting oxidizable contaminants, providing feedback to optimize processing and reduce production costs. -
Material Certification:
Suppliers can certify batches of caprolactam with quantitative PAN data, facilitating confidence and traceability in polymer supply chains. -
Research and Development:
Laboratories developing new plastic materials or purification technologies apply this standardized test to compare purity and evaluate impurity impacts on end-product properties.
