Sets out requirements for the sampling from moving streams and stationary situations, including stopped-belt sampling, to provide gross samples for sample preparation. The procedures recommended may not be applicable in cases of extreme segregation, e.g. very wet ore due to its sticky nature, or very dry ore due to generation of dust.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 8685:1992 – Aluminium Ores - Sampling Procedures establishes internationally recognized requirements for the sampling of aluminium ores from both moving streams and stationary situations. Published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), this standard provides methodologies such as moving stream sampling, stopped-belt sampling, and stationary sampling, ensuring that the collected gross samples are suitable for reliable sample preparation and analysis. The procedures aim to achieve representative sampling for accurate determination of ore quality, acknowledging that adjustments may be needed for highly segregated materials, such as very wet or dusty dry ores.
Key Topics
- Sampling Methodologies: Covers systematic procedures for sampling aluminium ores from moving conveyors, stationary piles, and during transportation.
- Gross Sample Collection: Specifies how to collect and combine increments to form representative gross samples for further processing.
- Stopped-Belt and Manual Sampling: Details the reference method for stopped-belt sampling and alternative manual sampling techniques.
- Sample Integrity: Addresses the importance of protecting samples against loss, contamination, or change in moisture-especially in cases where the integrity may be affected by environmental conditions.
- Sampling Scheme Design: Highlights key steps such as defining lots, determining increment size and frequency, and ensuring all particles have an equal chance of selection.
- Adaptive Procedures: Provides guidance for adapting methods when material heterogeneity poses specific challenges, such as excessive wetness or dryness.
- Quality and Precision: Incorporates terms and approaches to ensure sampling precision, including definitions for bias, precision, and minimum sample mass.
Applications
ISO 8685:1992 is widely applied by professionals in the mining, minerals processing, shipping, and commodity trading sectors who require standardized and repeatable methods for sampling aluminium ores. The procedures outlined facilitate:
- Quality Control: Ensuring reliable, unbiased sampling for accurate laboratory analysis of aluminium content and other key characteristics.
- Commercial Transactions: Supporting fair valuation and settlement through representative sampling in bulk shipments and stockpiles.
- Regulatory Compliance: Meeting international sampling and reporting obligations for traded minerals.
- Process Monitoring: Enabling ongoing monitoring of ore quality in mining and beneficiation processes, essential for process optimization and product consistency.
- Research and Development: Providing a standardized approach for sample collection in experimental studies on ore heterogeneity and processing methods.
Related Standards
Users of ISO 8685:1992 may also reference several other international standards to complement sampling procedures and improve overall analytical accuracy, including:
- ISO 6140: Aluminium ores - Preparation of samples, detailing methods for reducing and preparing gross samples for laboratory analysis.
- ISO 6138: Aluminium ores - Experimental determination of the heterogeneity of constitution, guiding the assessment of ore variability.
- ISO 6139: Aluminium ores - Determination of the heterogeneity of distribution, aiding in the understanding of material segregation.
- ISO 9033: Aluminium ores - Determination of the moisture content of bulk material, critical for sample integrity and accurate mass calculations.
- ISO 10226: Aluminium ores - Experimental methods for checking the bias of sampling, essential for validating sampling schemes.
- ISO 10277: Aluminium ores - Experimental methods for checking the precision of sampling.
Adhering to these coordinated standards helps organizations achieve optimal sampling reliability, analytical accuracy, and confidence in quality control for aluminium ore handling and trade.
