ISO 8693:2011 specifies the dimensions and tolerances, in millimetres, of flat ejector pins which are used in compression and injection moulds and in die casting dies. ISO 8693:2011 also gives material guidelines and hardness requirements, and specifies the designation of flat ejector pins.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 8693:2011 - Tools for moulding - Flat ejector pins describes standardized dimensions, tolerances, materials and hardness for flat ejector pins used in compression and injection moulds and in die-casting dies. The third edition (2011) updates surface texture indication in line with ISO 1302:2002 and defines how to designate flat ejector pins for procurement and documentation.
Key topics and requirements
- Dimensions and tolerances (mm): Dimensional tables and Figure 1 specify widths, thicknesses, lengths and gauge planes for flat ejector pins. Tables cover both hot-worked and alloyed cold-worked steel variants.
- Surface finish: Surface roughness values are given (e.g., Ra values differentiated for hot-worked and alloyed cold-worked steel). Edges must be without burrs; gauge planes are defined for measurement.
- Material guidance: Pins shall be made from hot-worked steel or alloyed cold-worked steel. The standard provides mechanical property guidance (including core strength and hardness ranges) and leaves the exact measurement point to the manufacturer’s discretion.
- Hardness requirements: The standard specifies hardness targets for shaft and head (table values include HV and HRC ranges for the two material families).
- Designation format: Prescribes a clear designation:
Flat ejector pin ISO 8693 - a × b - L - Material
Example: Flat ejector pin ISO 8693 - 0.8 × 3.5 - 63 - Hot worked steel. - Length correction: For lengths greater than the reference (100 mm), the document provides a method to scale limit deviations - see the tables for the specific factor.
Practical applications
- Ensures interchangeability and quality control of flat ejector pins in:
- Injection mould tooling
- Compression moulds
- Die-casting dies
- Helps toolmakers, mould designers and component manufacturers specify pins that meet consistent dimensional and hardness criteria, reducing trial-and-error during assembly and improving mold lifetime and part ejection reliability.
- Useful for procurement and quality inspection teams to verify conformity against a recognized international standard.
Who should use this standard
- Tool and die makers, mould designers and maintenance engineers
- Manufacturing and quality managers in plastics and die-casting industries
- Purchasing specialists and technical document authors preparing part specifications
