Abstract
Overview
ISO 8741:1997 is an international standard that specifies the characteristics, dimensions, and requirements for half-length reverse taper grooved pins primarily made from steel or austenitic stainless steel. These grooved pins feature three equally spaced longitudinal grooves over half their length, designed to create a secure non-positive locking fit when inserted into a drilled hole of nominal diameter. The standard covers pins with nominal diameters ranging from 1.5 mm to 25 mm, ensuring consistent quality and interchangeability for mechanical fastening applications.
Key Topics
-
Grooved Pin Design
The pins have three equally spaced grooves on half their length with a reverse taper, which displaces material creating an expanded diameter larger than the nominal diameter. This design ensures a tight fit in holes sized to the nominal diameter with tolerance class H11. -
Materials and Hardness Requirements
Pins are manufactured from either steel or austenitic stainless steel. Steel pins have a hardness range between 125 HV30 and 245 HV30, while stainless steel pins (grade A1) range from 210 HV30 to 280 HV30, aligning with ISO 3506-1. -
Dimensions and Tolerances
The standard specifies detailed pin dimensions, expanded diameters, groove angles, and length tolerances, critical for ensuring proper fit and mechanical performance. -
Surface Treatment and Finish
Steel pins are usually supplied plain or with black oxide, phosphate, or zinc plating coatings compliant with ISO 9717 and ISO 4042. Stainless steel pins are typically supplied in natural finish but can be coated as per customer-supplier agreement. -
Testing and Quality Assurance
Shear strength testing is conducted as per ISO 8749, and acceptance inspection follows ISO 3269 standards to guarantee pins meet mechanical and dimensional requirements.
Applications
ISO 8741 half-length reverse taper grooved pins are widely used in mechanical and industrial assembly applications where precise and secure fastening is required. Common uses include:
-
Mechanical Fastening
Providing semi-permanent fastening solutions in machinery, electronics, and automotive assemblies. -
Locating Components
Ensuring accurate positioning and alignment within assembled parts due to the locking fit achieved by the expanded groove design. -
Load Bearing Connections
In shear load scenarios where durability and reliability are critical, the specified shear strength ensures operational safety. -
Corrosion Resistant Environments
Austenitic stainless steel pins per ISO 8741 are suitable for applications exposed to harsh environments, offering enhanced corrosion resistance.
Related Standards
ISO 8741 references several important standards that complement its specifications, enhancing quality and compatibility:
