Overview
ISO 8772:2006 specifies requirements for polyethylene (PE) pipes, fittings and piping systems for non-pressure underground drainage and sewerage. It applies to buried pipework (including pipes buried within building structures) used to convey soil, domestic and industrial waste, and surface water. The standard covers geometry, material properties, joint types, performance tests and test parameters for PE drainage systems.
Keywords: ISO 8772:2006, polyethylene (PE) pipes, non-pressure underground drainage, sewerage, buried pipework
Key topics and technical requirements
-
Scope and applicability
- For PE pipes and fittings with or without integral sockets for non-pressure sewerage and drainage.
- Industrial discharges require separate consideration of chemical and temperature resistance.
-
Materials
- Base material: polyethylene (PE) with reference density ≥ 930 kg/m³.
- Allowed use of in-process reprocessable material; external recyclates are not permitted.
- Melt mass-flow rate (MFR) requirement: 0.2 to 1.4 g/10 min (ISO 1133 conditions: 190 °C, 5 kg).
-
Long-term performance
- Resistance-to-internal-pressure tests (ISO 1167): no failure at specified hoop stresses (e.g., 4 MPa for 165 h; 2.8 MPa for 1 000 h) when tested on pipe specimens.
- Thermal stability (OIT): oxidation induction time ≥ 20 min at 200 °C (ISO/TR 10837).
-
Geometry and dimensions
- Nominal outside diameters covered from DN/OD 110 up to DN/OD 2000 (mean ODs and tolerances are specified).
- Wall thicknesses and SDR/series options are defined; ring stiffness (SN) and standard dimension ratios (SDR) are addressed.
-
Jointing methods
- Permitted joint types: elastomeric ring seal, butt-fused, electrofusion, and mechanical joints.
- Guidance on sockets, spigots and sealing ring retention; sealing rings may be retained by non-PE polymer components.
-
Quality and testing
- Visual appearance, colour-through-wall requirements (preferably black), marking and test parameters (dimensions: ISO 3126; ring stiffness: ISO 9969; etc.) are specified.
Applications and who uses this standard
- Municipal and civil engineers specifying buried non-pressure drainage and sewer systems.
- Manufacturers of PE pipes and fittings ensuring compliance for sewerage use.
- Contractors and installers performing jointing (butt fusion, electrofusion, ring seal) and site acceptance testing.
- Specifiers and purchasers verifying material, dimensional and performance criteria for stormwater, soil and waste discharge pipelines.
