Specifies a basic set of commands for the interactive search of retrieval systems data and the types of response expected from the processing system. Is intended for use by designers and users of information retrieval systems, including computer-based library catalogues and computer-based database access and search facilities.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 8777:1993 - Information and documentation - Commands for interactive text searching defines a basic, vendor-neutral command language and expected system responses for command-driven interactive search systems. It is intended for designers and users of information retrieval systems such as computer-based library catalogues and online database search facilities. The Standard specifies command names, structural rules, and user/system behaviours to improve consistency and usability across search interfaces.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Command vocabulary: A concise set of international command names (e.g., FIND, SCAN, RELATE, BASE, SHOW, PRINT, SAVE, DELETE, DEFINE, INFO, HELP, REVIEW, FORWARD, BACK, STOP) with standard three‑letter truncations; unambiguous shorter truncations are accepted.
- Command structure: Every command expression starts with a command name followed by an optional command specification. The Standard defines the allowed components (search terms, qualifiers, result set identifiers) and the required ordering.
- Operators and qualifiers: Support for Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT), proximity operators, and ranging operators; field labels and other qualifiers are used to restrict or direct searches.
- Character handling and encoding: Designed for use with the 7‑bit character set (ISO/IEC 646); systems must be case‑insensitive and accept multiple spaces as a single separator.
- Separators and punctuation rules:
- Spaces separate components; a space between search words acts as a proximity (adjacency) operator.
- Commas separate like components (e.g., multiple qualifiers or record IDs).
- Semicolons allow command stacking (multiple commands in one input).
- Parentheses define precise grouping without requiring internal spaces.
- Search concepts: Definitions and expected behaviours for search terms, search statements, result sets, thesaurus scanning, index scanning, truncation/masking, and stopwords.
- User aids and session control: INFO and HELP for system and session guidance; commands for paging (FORWARD, BACK), saving/recalling strategies (SAVE), and session termination (STOP).
- Conformance: A conforming system must recognize and respond to the Standard’s commands; if a function is unavailable it must inform the user.
Practical applications and users
- Who uses it: Software architects, search UI designers, library system vendors, database providers, and information professionals who implement or operate interactive retrieval systems.
- Where it helps:
- Designing consistent, learnable command-driven search interfaces across catalogs and databases.
- Implementing standard behaviours for index scanning, thesaurus lookup, and query formulation.
- Facilitating interoperability and user training across different retrieval products.
- Benefits: Improved usability for infrequent users, predictable system responses, simplified documentation and training, and a stable baseline for extending command languages.
