This method is suitable for comparing small amounts of samples in the quality control of pigments. This part is for use in conjunction with the methods of assessment described in ISO 8781, using an agreed binder system of high viscosity free from volatile solvents. It is restricted to high-viscosity mill bases. The results obtained are suitable for comparison with dispersibility results obtained using other methods of dispersion. For any particular application, the items of supplementary information are given in the annex.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 8780-5:1990 is a key international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) for the paint and coatings industry. It specifies a method for dispersing pigments and extenders using an automatic muller, focusing on assessing and comparing the dispersion characteristics of small pigment samples. Primarily intended for quality control in manufacturing environments, this standard helps ensure consistent pigment performance by offering a reproducible method of dispersion with defined conditions. ISO 8780-5:1990 is designed to be used alongside assessment methods from ISO 8781 and is specifically restricted to high-viscosity mill bases using an agreed binder system free from volatile solvents.
Key Topics
- Purpose: The standard is tailored for the quality control of pigment dispersibility, providing a consistent method for preparing samples.
- Scope: Suitable for comparing small samples; restricted to high-viscosity mill bases and systems free from volatile solvents.
- Equipment: Utilizes an automatic muller with ground-glass plates capable of applying a known variable force and preset rotational frequency.
- Binder Systems: Requires an agreed binder system, with clear documentation of all binder properties and concentrations.
- Supplementary Information: Includes detailed requirements for type of automatic muller, binder system, mill base composition, dispersion conditions, and stabilization procedure.
- Assessment Coordination: Intended for use with ISO 8781 methods to evaluate properties such as tinting strength, fineness of grind, and gloss.
Applications
Implementing ISO 8780-5:1990 brings significant practical value to:
- Pigment Quality Control: Manufacturers can reliably compare the dispersibility of different pigment batches, identifying inconsistencies early in the production process.
- Process Harmonization: By following standardized dispersion methods, laboratories and manufacturing facilities can reduce variability and improve reproducibility across different sites and operators.
- Product Development: R&D laboratories can use the standardized muller method to assess new pigment formulations and optimize mill base compositions.
- Supplier Benchmarking: Paint and pigment producers can compare results obtained from different suppliers using a consistent test procedure, facilitating procurement and quality verification.
- Regulatory Compliance: Adhering to internationally accepted pigment dispersion methods streamlines compliance in regulated markets and supports certification processes.

Summary
In the context of pigment and extender testing, ISO 8780-5:1990 is a foundational reference for dispersion assessment using an automatic muller. It helps standardize quality control processes, supports comparison between different pigment samples, and ensures repeatability within laboratories and production facilities. By following this standard and its related guidelines, organizations can improve the reliability and consistency of their pigment dispersibility evaluations, contributing to higher-quality end products in the paints and coatings industry.
