ISO 8871-4:2006 - "Elastomeric parts for parenterals and for devices for pharmaceutical use - Part 4: Biological requirements and test methods" defines the biological safety requirements and test methods for elastomeric components used in direct contact with parenteral and pharmaceutical products. It specifies extraction procedures, references pharmacopoeial and ISO biological test instructions, and complements other parts of ISO 8871 that cover extractables, identification, particle release and functional testing.

- Extraction procedures: The standard supplies extraction guidance (e.g., surface-area-based extraction, handling of complex cavities) and notes when cutting parts may be necessary to ensure adequate recovery.
- Validation & reference methods: All analytical and biological methods used should be validated and assessed against USP/Ph.Eur. and ISO biological test criteria.
