ISO 8887-1:2017 specifies the requirements for the preparation, content and structure of technical product documentation (TPD) of design output for the cycles of manufacturing, assembling, disassembling and end-of-life processing of products. It describes the TPD needed at the critical stages of a design process. It identifies and describes methods and conventions appropriate to the preparation of documentation, in whatever form, necessary to realize a design including the application to multiple life cycles. It extends beyond specification for the manufacturing and assembling of products to incorporate guidance on the ultimate reusing, recovering, recycling and disposing of the components and materials used.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 8887-1:2017 - "Technical product documentation - Design for manufacturing, assembling, disassembling and end-of-life processing - Part 1: General concepts and requirements" specifies requirements for the preparation, content and structure of technical product documentation (TPD). The standard defines what documentation is needed at critical stages of design to support manufacturing, assembling, disassembling and end-of-life processing (reuse, recovery, recycling, disposal). It emphasizes life‑cycle thinking and documents design decisions to enable multiple life cycles of products and components.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and purpose: TPD for the cycles of manufacturing, assembling, disassembling and end-of-life processing; applicable to all types of manufactured products.
- Design aims: Integrate environmental and life‑cycle considerations during design to reduce long‑term cost and environmental impact.
- Design brief & concept: Prepare and document the design brief (market need, feasibility, serviceability, end‑of‑life) and the chosen design concept.
- Iterative design stages: Record each refinement stage and decisions to allow traceability against the design brief.
- Design archives: Retain records of design and manufacturing decisions, modelling results, legal/standards references, user/maintenance instructions, and IP implications.
- Manufacturing & assembling documentation: Include 2D drawings and 3D models, bills of material (including materials from previous life cycles), purchasing info, process and assembly instructions, jigs/fixtures, test specifications/results, tooling drawings and traceability/certificates.
- Disassembling & end‑of‑life documentation: Maintain records of maintenance/use, material identification, take‑back scheme info and changes affecting reuse/recycling.
- Informative guidance: Annex A covers component count and ease of assembly/disassembly; Annex B addresses life‑cycle considerations.
Practical applications and users
Who uses ISO 8887-1:2017:
- Product designers and design engineers creating manufacturable and maintainable products
- Technical authors and documentation teams preparing TPD (drawings, BOMs, 3D models)
- Manufacturing and assembly engineers specifying processes, tooling and quality evidence
- Service, refurbishment and recycling operators who need disassembly and materials data
- Compliance, sustainability and procurement teams implementing take‑back, recycling or circular‑economy requirements
Practical benefits:
- Improves manufacturability and assembly efficiency (lower part count, clearer instructions)
- Enables traceability and quality control via comprehensive documentation and certificates
- Facilitates disassembly, recycling and reuse through clear material identification and end‑of‑life records
- Supports regulatory compliance and corporate sustainability targets
