Overview
ISO 8895:2004 specifies a standardized method for determining the cold crushing strength of shaped insulating refractory products at room temperature. The procedure defines sample preparation, equipment, test conditions and calculation of strength so that manufacturers, laboratories and purchasers can obtain repeatable, comparable compression-strength data for insulating refractories.

- Expected strength < 10 MPa: stress increase 0.05 MPa/s ± 0.005 MPa/s.
- Expected strength ≥ 10 MPa: stress increase 0.2 MPa/s ± 0.02 MPa/s.
- Termination: Continue until collapse or height reduced to 90% ±1% of original; record maximum load.
- Calculation: S (MPa) = Fmax (N) / (l × b) (mm²); report to nearest 0.1 MPa.
- Test report: Must include sample ID, reference to ISO 8895, sampling details, test conditions, individual values, any deviations or anomalies, testing lab and test date.
