ISO 8969:2011 specifies test methods for determining the strength and stiffness of joints made with punched metal plate fasteners in load-bearing timber structures, as follows: load-slip characteristics and maximum load resulting from the lateral resistance of the embedded projections, at various angles between the direction of the applied force and the axis of the plate (load-plate angle, α), the direction of the grain of the timber (load-grain angle, θ); the tensile strength of the plate at various angles, α; the compression strength of the plate at various angles, α (optional test); the shear strength of the plate at various angles, α. ISO 8969:2011 is linked to ISO 6891, which gives general test requirements. In addition, a method for testing the nail root in alternate bending is specified in Annex A.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 8969:2011 - "Timber structures - Testing of punched metal plate fasteners and joints" specifies standardized test methods to determine the strength and stiffness of joints that use punched metal plate fasteners in load-bearing timber structures. The standard covers lateral resistance (load‑slip behavior), plate tensile, shear and (optionally) compression strength, and includes a normative Annex A for nail-root alternate bending testing. ISO 8969:2011 is linked to ISO 6891 for general test requirements.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope of tests:
- Load‑slip characteristics and maximum load from lateral resistance of embedded plate projections at varying load‑plate angle (α) and load‑grain angle (θ).
- Plate tensile strength (various α).
- Plate compression strength (optional).
- Plate shear strength (various α).
- Materials & specimen rules:
- Punched metal plate fasteners defined with plate thickness 0.9 mm to 2.5 mm.
- Timber selection per ISO 8970; timber members of each specimen cut from the same plank to ensure balanced density; avoid knots and defects in the fastener embedment area.
- Timber moisture content and density measured per ISO 3130 and ISO 3131; typical testing moisture content ≥11% (solid-sawn) or ≥7% (structural composite).
- Specimen fabrication & assembly:
- Plates must be fully embedded using production methods (press/roller); avoid over‑pressing and gaps; keeper nails handled according to production practice.
- Minimum waiting period of seven days between assembly and testing for fibre relaxation.
- Test procedures & reporting:
- Tensile tests on solid metal control specimens per ASTM E8/E8M.
- ISO 8969 provides adjustment factors to account for differences in steel yield strength and plate thickness when deriving lateral resistance values.
- Minimum specimen counts (statistical treatment): typically at least five joints per combination for load‑slip tests; for plate metal strength tests a minimum of three specimens (more for withdrawal tests).
Practical applications and users
- Useful for structural engineers, timber connection designers, fastener and plate manufacturers, third‑party testing laboratories, certification bodies, and researchers evaluating punched metal plate fasteners in trusses, prefabricated timber elements and heavy timber connectors.
- Ensures repeatable, comparable data for design capacity, connection stiffness, quality control, product development and regulatory compliance in timber construction.
