Specifies a method for determining fibre coarseness (which is a fibre property characterizing pulp): distribution of a known mass of fibres evenly over a known area, counting the number of fibre crossings along a line of known length on a microscope slide. The weight factor can be calculated from the fibre coarseness. The method is applicable to pulps with relatively intact fibres, such as chemical and semichemical pulps. Does not apply to mechanical and semimechanical pulps or highly beaten chemical or semichemical pulps.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 9184-6:1994 is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) as part of the broader ISO 9184 series, focusing on fibre furnish analysis in paper, board, and pulps. Part 6 specifically addresses the determination of fibre coarseness, a key property for pulp characterization. Fibre coarseness is defined as the mean mass (oven dry) per unit length of fibre and is measured in milligrams per metre.
This method is essential in the paper and pulp industry for assessing fibre quality and ensuring product consistency. ISO 9184-6:1994 is applicable primarily to pulps containing relatively intact fibres, such as chemical and semichemical pulps. It is not suitable for mechanical, semimechanical, or highly beaten pulps.
Key Topics
- Fibre Coarseness Measurement: The standard outlines a procedure for evenly distributing a known mass of pulp fibres over a defined area and counting fibre crossings along a measured line on a microscope slide.
- Sample Applicability: It is specifically designed for pulps with largely intact fibres, limiting its use with mechanical or highly beaten pulps.
- Calculated Weight Factor: The results of the coarseness determination can be used to calculate the weight factor, which is an important parameter in fibre furnish analysis.
- Microscopic Technique: The procedure employs microscopic analysis for precise counting and measurement, ensuring accurate and reliable results.
- Repeatability: Guidance is provided regarding minimum test sizes (minimum 2,400 fibres counted) and intralaboratory repeatability, depending on operator skill and the number of fibres counted.
Applications
The method established by ISO 9184-6:1994 is widely used in:
- Pulp Quality Assessment: Evaluating the physical properties of chemical and semichemical pulps in quality control laboratories.
- Papermaking Process Optimization: Understanding fibre coarseness assists papermakers in selecting suitable pulp blends for targeted paper properties such as strength, absorption, and printability.
- R&D and Product Development: Research institutions and product developers utilize fibre coarseness data to innovate and improve paper and board products.
- Comparative Analysis: Pulp producers and converters use coarseness data to benchmark against standards and customers’ quality specifications.
Related Standards
ISO 9184-6:1994 is part of the ISO 9184 series, which covers various aspects of fibre furnish analysis:
- ISO 9184-1:1990: General method for fibre furnish analysis.
- ISO 9184-2: Staining guide for fibre identification.
- ISO 9184-3: Herzberg stain test.
- ISO 9184-4: Graff "C" stain test.
- ISO 9184-5: Lofton-Merritt stain test (modified Wisbar).
- ISO 9184-7:1994: Determination of weight factor (often calculated using results from Part 6).
- ISO 638:1978: Determination of dry matter content in pulps.
- ISO 5269-1:1979: Preparation of laboratory sheets for physical testing.
Each part of the ISO 9184 family adds value to comprehensive fibre furnish analysis, supporting the paper and pulp industry's advancement in quality assurance and material science.
Practical Value
- Quality Control: Precision measurement of fibre coarseness enables manufacturers to maintain consistent pulp and paper quality.
- Process Improvement: By understanding the coarseness profile of fibres, production processes can be refined for enhanced product properties.
- Standardized Reporting: ISO 9184-6:1994 provides a common language and protocol, facilitating reliable data sharing and product comparison across the global paper and pulp industry.
