Abstract
Overview
ISO 9203-2:1989 is Part 2 of the ISO 9203 series that standardizes the topology and description of ship hull structural elements. Its purpose is to enable accurate, unambiguous referencing and communication of hull structure information within and between organizations (design offices, shipyards, suppliers, classification societies). The part specifies the descriptive data and file content needed to record plates, stiffeners, welded seams and openings so they can be exchanged and processed consistently.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Element identification and topology: each structural element (plate, rolled profile, composite stiffener, etc.) requires a unique identifier and links to its location (see ISO 9203‑1 for location rules).
- Required data fields: typical mandatory attributes include element identifier, material code, thickness (millimetres), numbers of plates and openings, and counts of butt welds.
- Plate/edge detail: for plated elements the standard lists per-plate data (ID, material, thickness, number of edges) and per-edge references (limit identifier or butt-weld line identifier).
- Stiffeners and profiles: rolled-profile and composite stiffeners use profile codes, material codes, web/thickness details, weld counts and catalog symbols for end connections.
- Openings and catalogue symbols: openings (manholes, lightening holes, cable/pipe passages, notches, arches) are associated to elements with identifiers, symmetry codes and catalogue symbols describing shape, dimensions and position. Catalogues of openings/ends are outside the scope and require agreement between parties.
- Weld and line files: the standard specifies that internal web-line and butt-weld line representations be stored using the ship lines data format defined in ISO 7838; outer plating descriptions refer to ISO 8193.
- Coordinate and symmetry conventions: coordinates for points on contact lines and symmetry codes are part of the descriptive data to support consistent placement and mirroring.
