This document specifies minimum requirements for the optical effects and the mechanical, chemical and environmental properties of antireflecting coatings. This document applies to antireflecting coatings for optical applications. Thereby the user is able to rely on defined numerical data while the manufacturer of thin films has the choice for the materials and production method.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 9211-5:2018 sets the minimum requirements for antireflecting coatings used in optical applications, encompassing their optical, mechanical, chemical, and environmental properties. This international standard enables users to rely on standardized numerical data for antireflective performance, while giving manufacturers flexibility in selecting materials and production methods. It applies to coatings designed to reduce reflectance on optical components, ensuring consistent quality and durability in optics and photonics industries.
Key Topics
- Scope and Application: Specifies minimum performance criteria for antireflecting coatings relevant to optics, covering spectral reflectance, adhesion, abrasion resistance, chemical durability, and environmental stability.
- Types of Antireflecting Coatings:
- Type U: Single-layer coating with a unique reflectance minimum at a specific wavelength.
- Type V: Double-layer coating featuring a sharper reflectance minimum and lower reflectance than Type U, tuned to substrate refractive index.
- Type W: Multilayer coating with broad spectral reflectance reduction largely independent of substrate properties.
- Type X: Multilayer coatings with optical properties defined in ISO 9211-2 not fitting types U, V, or W.
- Design and Indication: Guidance on standards-based designation and schematic indication on optical drawings, maintaining clarity and traceability.
- Minimum Requirements: Detailed quantitative criteria covering:
- Spectral Reflectance-strict numerical limits depending on coating type and substrate refractive index.
- Spectral Absorption-maximum allowable absorption values to ensure optical clarity.
- Scatter Light-limits on diffuse scattering to maintain optical performance.
- Adherence and Durability-tests simulating abrasion, solvent exposure, temperature cycling, UV radiation, and humidity.
- Chemical Resistance-requirements for withstanding solvents and chemicals without performance loss.
Applications
ISO 9211-5:2018 is critical for:
- Optical Lens Manufacturing: Ensures coatings reduce glare and reflections to improve image quality in cameras, microscopes, telescopes, and other precision optics.
- Photonic Devices: Provides standards for antireflective layers in laser systems, fiber optics, and sensors where light efficiency is vital.
- Display Technologies: Enhances visibility and reduces unwanted reflections in screens and optical filters.
- Durability Testing: Assists suppliers and end-users in validating the long-term performance of antireflective coatings under environmental stresses such as heat, moisture, and abrasion.
- Quality Control: Offers a framework for consistent product quality assurance and conformity assessment in manufacturing lines.
Related Standards
ISO 9211-5:2018 is part of a comprehensive series on optical coatings and related topics:
