Specifies a procedure for calculating the volume of dozer blades. Is intended to be used for consistent comparisons of dozer blade capacities presented in commercial literature for tractors, as defined in ISO 6165. Applies to all types of dozers that are mounted on all tractors defined in ISO 6747. This includes straight, angling, semi-U-, and U-blade configurations. It is assumed that the blade face is flat and vertical.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 9246:1988 specifies a standardized procedure for calculating the volumetric ratings of dozer blades used on crawler and wheel tractors. Its purpose is to provide a consistent, reproducible method to report dozer blade capacities in commercial literature so buyers and specifiers can compare models reliably. The standard applies to straight, angling (inclinable), semi‑U and U‑blade configurations mounted on tractors defined by ISO 6165 and ISO 6747. Key assumptions include the blade placed in an average attack position with the cutting edge on the reference ground plane and the use of a simplified effective face (projected vertical plane) for capacity calculations.
Key Topics
- Scope and intent
- Method for calculating blade volume for comparison purposes, not for predicting field productivity.
- Definitions and geometry
- Projected blade area (A_p), width (W), effective blade height (H'), effective contour and curvature parameters (angle α, curvature length).
- Assumptions
- Blade face treated as flat and vertical for projection and simplified contour representation.
- Blade in average attack position (cutting edge on the reference plane).
- Volume formulas
- For straight and inclinable blades: a baseline volumetric formula for Vs (as given in the standard) using W and H'.
- For semi‑U and U blades: total volume V = Vs + Vu, where Vu is an additional term accounting for blade curvature (Vu expressed in terms of H', W, curvature angle α and curvature length as defined in the standard).
- Limitations
- Not intended to account for operational factors that affect productivity (soil properties, tractor power, operator technique, terrain, etc.).
Applications
- Equipment manufacturers: to publish consistent dozer blade volumetric ratings in catalogs and technical sheets.
- Equipment buyers, fleet managers and specifiers: to compare blade capacities across different models and configurations.
- Rental companies and resale appraisal: to standardize capacity descriptions for valuations.
- Standards developers and conformity assessors: to reference a common calculation method when defining performance descriptors for earth‑moving machinery.
