Abstract

Overview

ISO 9311-3:2005 - Adhesives for thermoplastic piping systems - Part 3: Test method for the determination of resistance to internal pressure - defines a standardized hydrostatic test to assess the ability of adhesive-bonded thermoplastic pipe assemblies to resist internal pressure. The method produces reproducible results for adhesive performance under controlled conditions and is intended for use where bonded joints must maintain integrity under pressure.

Test principle: Bonded tube-and-fitting assemblies are prepared, conditioned and subjected to a constant internal hydrostatic pressure for a specified time or until failure. Tests are performed in a controlled environment: water-in-water, water-in-liquid, or water-in-air.
Specimen preparation: Tubes (example in the standard: 40 mm diameter, ≥150 mm length) and fittings are cleaned, deburred and prepared per adhesive manufacturer instructions. Clearance (diametral play) must be set where required.
Conditioning and cure: Specimens are conditioned at (23 ± 2) °C and (50 ± 5) % relative humidity (minimum durations indicated), and stored for the specified cure (time of set) before testing. For each cure time, at least three specimens are prepared.
Apparatus: Test setup follows ISO 1167 hydrostatic test equipment, using end plugs of type A as specified. Pressure, temperature, specimen orientation and test duration are defined by the referencing standard.
Acceptance criterion: An adhesive passes the test if no leakage occurs along the bonded interface under the specified conditions.
Reporting: Test reports must include references to ISO 9311-3 and normative documents, adhesive and cleaning agent identification, tube/fitting details and dimensions, specimen prep and cure time, conditioning and test conditions, environment (air/water/liquid), applied pressure and duration, and any incidents affecting results.
Safety: Users must observe laboratory safety practices and applicable national/EU regulations.
