Specifies the minimum requirements to allow efficient lashing and securing of semi-trailers, as defined in ISO 3833, on board Ro/Ro ships, indicating in particular the lashing arrangements on the semi-trailer and the securing method to be used. Annex A gives, for information to semi-trailer designers, the securing point arrangements generally used on Ro/Ro ships, annex B describes for information some design indications to decrease damage during handling.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 9367-2:1994 - "Lashing and securing arrangements on road vehicles for sea transportation on Ro/Ro ships - Part 2: Semi‑trailers" defines minimum requirements to enable efficient lashing and securing of semi‑trailers (as defined in ISO 3833) for roll‑on/roll‑off (Ro/Ro) sea transport. The standard covers the location, number, strength and testing of lashing points on semi‑trailers, marking and identification, trestle (support) location, and practical design guidance (informative annexes) to reduce damage during handling.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Applies to semi‑trailers intended for stowage on Ro/Ro decks; includes informative Annex A (ship securing point arrangements) and Annex B (design indications to reduce handling damage).
- Lashing points
- Must permit reliable attachment of one lashing per point (hinged, fixed or swivelling).
- Strength requirement: each lashing point shall withstand a test force of 120 kN without permanent deformation, checked by calculation or static test.
- Free passage & hook size: opening to pass a circle of at least 80 mm diameter; allow a hook opening of 25 mm (larger for hinged/swivelling points).
- Number & location: same number of lashing points on each side; semi‑trailers 20–40 t GVM require at least four pairs; longitudinal and transverse placement defined (including recommended offsets such as ~300 mm datum positions and calculated spacings).
- Trestle location: recommended position relative to fifth‑wheel/king‑pin and goose‑neck contour; marking on vehicle identifies trestle range.
- Marking & information plate: permanent plate (200 × 150 mm) with number of lashing points and an anchor sketch; lashing rings painted in a contrasting bright colour; plate height recommended 1 000–1 500 mm.
- Additional design items: parking brake accessibility, air‑suspension “Road / Ro/Ro” position device, jacking‑up points, rear underride protection, recessed fittings and bumpers to limit damage.
Applications - who uses this standard
- Semi‑trailer designers and manufacturers - to integrate compliant lashing points and structural strength.
- Ro/Ro ship operators and ship designers - to coordinate deck securing arrangements (refer Annex A).
- Freight forwarders, port operators and vehicle handling teams - to ensure safe stowage, marking and handling practices.
- Regulatory bodies, surveyors and maritime safety auditors - for inspection, certification and accident prevention.
Related standards
- ISO 3833 (vehicle types and definitions)
- ISO 9367‑1 (Part 1: commercial vehicles and combinations) - for complementary requirements on other vehicle types
ISO 9367‑2 supports safe, standardized lashing and reduces cargo damage in Ro/Ro operations - essential for transport planners, designers and maritime logistics professionals working with semi‑trailers.
