ISO 9381:2005 applies to all vertically hinged or pivoted doors. ISO 9381:2005 specifies the method to be used to determine the permanent deformation caused when static stress in torsion is applied to an open door leaf fixed in its own door frame as part of a doorset. ISO 9381:2005 can also be used in respect a door leaf submitted for test in a frame which the manufacturer considers appropriate to and typical for the intended utilisation.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 9381:2005 is an international standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies the method for determining the resistance to static torsion of hinged or pivoted doors. This standard applies to all vertically hinged or pivoted doors and focuses on measuring the permanent deformation caused when a static torsion force is applied to an open door leaf fixed in its own door frame as part of a complete doorset. The standard is essential for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and quality assurance professionals involved in door design, testing, and certification.
The purpose of ISO 9381:2005 is to ensure that doors subjected to static torsional stress-such as during attempts to force open or unjam a door-maintain structural integrity without suffering damage or significant deformation that could impair their performance.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Applicability
ISO 9381:2005 applies specifically to vertically hinged or pivoted doors in a vertical plane. It is relevant both for door leaves tested within their manufacturer-recommended frames and for those assessed with typical frames representative of intended use. -
Testing Methodology
The standard defines a precise procedure to measure door leaf deformation under a defined static torsion load:- Door leaf is positioned open at approximately 90 degrees in its frame.
- A preload is applied to compensate for hinge play.
- A calibrated static torsional force (F), adjustable with a precision device, is applied at the lower corner on the lock side.
- Deformations during and after load application are carefully measured using high-accuracy comparators.
-
Test Equipment
Requirements for rigid and non-deforming test frames, calibrated load application devices, and precise measuring instruments with accuracy to 0.01 mm are specified to ensure consistency and reliability of test results. -
Results and Documentation
The standard details the recording of deformation under load and residual deformation after unloading. Test reports must include comprehensive information, such as door and frame details, load applied, environmental conditions during testing, and any damage observed.
Applications
-
Door Manufacturing and Quality Control
Door manufacturers use ISO 9381:2005 to validate and certify that their hinged or pivoted doors meet structural performance requirements concerning torsional rigidity and durability under static stress conditions. -
Product Certification and Compliance
This standard supports product certification schemes and regulatory compliance by providing an internationally recognized test method for torsional resistance. -
Design and Engineering
Engineers can utilize the results generated through this standard's test procedures to improve door leaf and frame designs to enhance durability, safety, and performance under torsional forces. -
Installation and Maintenance
Understanding torsional resistance as per ISO 9381:2005 aids installers and maintenance personnel in selecting appropriate door systems for applications where static torsional stresses may occur, such as in high-traffic or security-sensitive environments.
