Overview
ISO 9443:2018 - Surface quality classes for hot‑rolled bars and wire rod specifies technical delivery requirements for the surface quality of hot‑rolled round bars, squares, hexagons and wire rod with nominal dimensions from 5 mm to 200 mm. The standard defines surface quality classes (A to E), how to order and designate surface finish requirements, inspection and test methods for detecting surface discontinuities, and permitted handling and repair practices. It is intended primarily for steels used in engineering and structural applications and can be applied to bright products and tool steels by agreement.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and applicability: Applies to hot‑rolled bars and wire rod (5–200 mm); can be extended to special profiles by agreement. It does not set limits for surface decarburization depth (see ISO 3887).
- Surface quality classes: Five classes (A, B, C, D, E) describe allowable surface discontinuities and recommended use (from rough machining to very heavy duty applications). The classes are defined in Table 1 of the standard.
- Admissible portion (z): The maximum admissible portion of defective material in a delivery lot is specified (default values in the standard) and can be negotiated between purchaser and manufacturer.
- Ordering and designation: Orders should specify the surface quality class, the admissible portion z (if different from the default), and the type of verification or sampling.
- Inspection and test methods: Non‑destructive and technological detection methods are allowed:
- Visual inspection
- Magnetic flux/magnetic particle inspection
- Eddy‑current (inductive) methods
- Dye‑penetrant methods
- Ultrasonic testing
- Technological tests (hot‑upsetting, cold compression, torsion per ISO 7800)
- In case of dispute, metallographic examination of a specimen is decisive for depth measurement.
- Repairs: Imperfections may be removed by grinding within tolerance if agreed. Welding repairs are permitted only by agreement and must not impair material properties.
Applications and users
ISO 9443:2018 is practical for:
- Steel mills and hot‑rolling producers specifying or guaranteeing surface quality for delivery
- Purchasers, quality engineers and procurement teams defining acceptance criteria for bars and wire rod
- Machining, forging, drawing and fastener manufacturers selecting material suited to downstream processing
- Inspection laboratories and NDT technicians implementing surface testing and acceptance plans
- Standards writers and product engineers aligning material specifications with intended service (e.g., bearings, springs, transmission parts, high‑strength fasteners)
