This document specifies the main characteristics of ski-bindings and describes, as an example, test methods A and B. This document applies to ski-bindings for alpine skiing for children, juniors and adults.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 9462:2023 - "Alpine ski-bindings - Requirements and test methods" defines the essential characteristics, safety requirements and laboratory test methods for alpine ski-bindings used by children, juniors and adults. The fifth edition updates definitions, introduces compatibility checks with ISO 23223 boots, and provides two exemplar laboratory procedures (test methods A and B) plus normative and informative annexes for test fixtures, dirt grain sizes and tolerances.
Keywords: ISO 9462:2023, alpine ski-bindings, requirements and test methods, binding safety, binding compatibility
Key technical topics and requirements
- Binding types and release values
- Type C (children) and Type CA (junior) bindings are defined with minimum adjustable release torque values (examples shown in the standard). Type A and Type MN (multi-norm) bindings are specified for adult or multi-standard soles.
- Release behaviour
- Definitions and measurement of release, release value (torques Mz and My), and reference values used to evaluate binding performance.
- Test methods A and B
- Laboratory procedures include a simple torsion test, forward bending test, and combined loading scenarios to assess realistic release behaviour.
- Environmental and durability tests
- Procedures for low temperature exposure, icing, snow pack, vibration and shock, corrosion and dirt influence on release reproducibility. Annexes supply details (fixtures, test soles, dirt grain-size).
- Performance criteria
- Requirements for setting, reproducibility and symmetry of release values, energy absorption (recentring), and lateral release under impact loading.
- Compatibility and marking
- Compatibility checks to ISO 23223 (boots with improved walking soles) and marking requirements for safe use.
Practical applications
- Product safety verification and type testing for new alpine ski-binding designs.
- Laboratory test protocols for certification bodies and independent test labs.
- Design guidance for binding manufacturers (release mechanics, tolerance and durability).
- Quality control and production testing to ensure settings remain reproducible across environmental conditions.
- Reference for ski shops and rental businesses to understand binding categories and compatibility with boot sole standards.
Who should use ISO 9462:2023
- Binding and ski-boot manufacturers
- Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies
- Standards specialists, product safety engineers and R&D teams in snowsports equipment
- Regulators and technical committees overseeing sports equipment safety
Related standards
- ISO 5355 (alpine ski-boots)
