This document specifies a method for the determination of ventilation which is applicable to cigarettes.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 9512:2019 - "Cigarettes - Determination of ventilation - Definitions and measurement principles" is an international standard that defines terms and specifies a method for measuring ventilation in unlit cigarettes. It sets out the measurement principle (air drawn at a constant flow in the smoking direction), apparatus and calibration requirements, sampling and conditioning rules, and how to express and report results. The third edition introduces the prime designator (Q′) for inlet-side ventilation components and updates calibration and precision information.
Key topics and technical requirements
-
Scope and terminology
- Clear definitions for ventilation, total airflow (Q), ventilation airflow (Q′) and degree of ventilation including component types (filter, paper, butt, tipping‑paper, cigarette‑paper).
- Standard total airflow under test conditions: Q = 17.5 ml/s (as defined under ISO 3308 conditions).
-
Measurement principle
- Air is drawn through an unlit cigarette at a constant volumetric flow; individual ventilation components are measured separately and converted to percentages of total airflow.
-
Apparatus and setup
- Cigarettes must be encapsulated in a measurement head with insertion depth per ISO 3308.
- Seals and partitioning devices shall be sized/positioned to minimize measurement bias.
- Measurement atmosphere and conditioning must follow ISO 3402.
- A generator for total airflow (often a critical flow orifice in vacuum systems) is used to maintain constant flow; deviations shall not exceed ±0.10 ml/s.
- Measuring pressure in the head must not be more than 20 Pa below the testing atmosphere.
-
Calibration and verification
- Calibration of ventilation instruments and standards is required (see Annex A and Annex B) and must cover the expected measurement range.
- Devices must be leak‑free and checked according to manufacturer recommendations.
-
Procedure and reporting
- Condition samples per ISO 3402, calibrate instruments, measure ventilation components, and report mean values with standardized rounding (individual values ≥1 decimal, means and SD to 1 decimal).
Practical applications and who uses this standard
- Tobacco manufacturers - product design, quality control and release testing for ventilated cigarettes.
- Analytical and contract testing laboratories - standardized measurement protocols for consistent, comparable results.
- Instrument manufacturers - design and calibration guidance for ventilation measurement devices.
- Regulatory bodies and R&D teams - method for verifying declared ventilation and assessing product characteristics related to smoke dilution.

- ISO 3308 - Routine analytical cigarette‑smoking machine: insertion depth and standard conditions.
- ISO 3402 - Conditioning and testing atmosphere for tobacco products.
- ISO 6565 - Draw resistance and pressure‑drop measurement for cigarettes and filter rods.
ISO 9512:2019 provides the essential measurement definitions and principles needed to quantify cigarette ventilation reliably and reproducibly across industry and regulatory testing.
