This International Standard specifies the dimensions and mechanical properties of cycle chains, as well as test methods for determining these mechanical properties (i.e. twist, lateral deviation, stiff link and side bow). NOTE The dimensions of sprockets for cycle chains are specified in ISO 606.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 9633:2001 - Cycle chains: Characteristics and test methods defines the dimensional and mechanical requirements for cycle (bicycle) chains and the standardized test methods used to verify those properties. Published as the second edition in 2001, this International Standard covers chain designation, interchangeability dimensions, tensile testing, pin push‑out resistance, pre‑loading and length accuracy, and four specific mechanical checks: twist, lateral deviation, stiff link and side bow. The standard complements sprocket dimensions specified in ISO 606.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Chain designation and dimensions: Cycle chains are identified by ISO chain numbers (e.g., 081 C, 082 C). Tabled dimensions ensure interchangeability between manufacturers.
- Tensile testing: Minimum tensile strengths are given (see Table 1). Tensile tests are destructive and performed on chain lengths with at least five free pitches under controlled shackle mounting.
- Pin push‑out (pin retention): A specific test apparatus measures the force required to push a pin out of an outer plate; minimum push‑out forces are specified for applicable chain types.
- Pre‑loading and length accuracy: Chains are pre‑loaded to one‑third of minimum tensile strength before length measurement; measurement protocols and allowable tolerances are defined.
- Twist measurement: Uses a 49‑link sample. Procedure applies a 5 N tensile load and ±0.2 N·m torque; angular displacements are recorded and evaluated against the standard’s acceptance criteria.
- Lateral deviation: Performed on a minimum 49‑link sample using a calibrated straightedge. The test applies 12.5 N then 1 kN to verify the straightness and lateral travel of the chain.
- Stiff link detection: A simple mechanical check uses a 25.4 mm test rod and a surface plate; any link that will not fall flat is declared stiff.
- Side bow: Measured on a degreased 49‑link sample by applying 3 N, releasing, and measuring arc height; acceptance limits are specified (e.g., arc heights measured within the standard’s range).
Applications and who uses it
- Bicycle component manufacturers and chain suppliers - design, production tolerancing, and quality control.
- Testing and inspection laboratories - standardized procedures for conformance testing.
- Procurement and specification writers - include ISO 9633 requirements in purchase contracts to ensure interchangeability and safety.
- Product designers and maintenance professionals - use the standard to assess durability, fit, and serviceability of chains.
